Microsoft can afford the losses, but they don't want to. Either they think ditching it is shortsighted, or they'll ditch it.
Unbundling the Kinect from the XBO probably costed MS a lot, too. In addition, they likely took a big hit from cutting the price down to $349 with Assassin's Creed: Unity and Black Flag last holiday season. However, MS knew the XBO would be in trouble if it didn't have as good of a holiday season as it had.

No? They made even more after Kinect came out.
This is just evidence that their profits began long ago in 2008/09, even earlier than I remembered.

That's what I was asking, if you had that data.  Plus the Google money data, like when Google lost their court battle and owed Microsoft 2 billion a year.  Are those profits from Google or Xbox?  Cause if Google money is in there, the division is loosing mad cash to eat up a billion.

Well they've been profiting for a while now, recently. Of course they have other things in this division but then we can't really talk about how much they lost on their consoles either

Well if 2.5 billion dollars of free money turns into 1.5 billion dollars profit, they're running a 1 billion dollar loss.  I doubt it's Windows, Tablets, and mice losing money...

That is not Xbox only (a lot of patents and others things cover the lossin Xbox)... nobody knows but the rumors says they never have good profits with the Xbox only.

Xbro

They had some success at the end of the 360s life, small as it may have been. They were planning on riding that success through the XB1, but that didn't quite work out.

They had 15m+ XBL subscribers for a while basically making them gold and then Kinect came along and sold really well along with its games. They were making money on 360 quite easily a few years before the end of the gen, that much should be obvious to anyone.

from where did you get that specific 2.5 billion? from what i understand for every Andriod smartphone sold they get a fee due to patents. its not a set amount of money.

Microsoft is making $2bn a year on Android licensing - five times more than Windows Phone | ZDNet

2 billion, not 2.5.

This is the problem isn't it, they had all those subscribers, 2 billion coming from Google, and their profits were less than the free money coming in.  They have a very fundamental flaw in their business.  I have no idea what it is, but there's a huge flaw when that division's profits isn't 3 billion but instead 1.something.

Profits in 2010 are around $2B according to the graph above, and 2011 likely quite a bit higher based on the first two Q's. They don't seem to have been losing a lot on it in any case in the later years. The losses are probably mostly due to Windows phone. I mean, how the hell could they have been losing on 360 back in 2011?

again that 2 billion figure isnt permanent for every year. it was around 2B THAT fiscal year, it states in the article they get between 5$-15$ per andriod device sold. the 2B figure was for that FY only.

considering that Andriod sales were steadily rising at that time its safe to assume that the years after it the money they made were higher than 2B, though it also means the years before it (which saw a hefty YoY increase in andriod sales) were less than 2B.

no way were they losing Money on the XB1 in 2011 and 2012. they shipped around 25 million 360's in those 2 years, sold around 20 million Kinects and software sales were through the roof, and had shame loads of XBL subs.
