That's really funny. He doesn't even say the thing he was quoted as saying.

State of play announced

Legend

So state of play is just stuff releasing this year. Is sony keeping their cards close to their chest or has development just gone horribly this generation?

4 years since Naughty Dog last had a main game, nothing announced.
4 years since Asobi had a game, nothing announced.
5 years since Bend had a game, nothing announced.
4 years since Sucker Punch had a game, nothing announced.
4 years since Bluepoint had a game, nothing announced.
4 years since Media Molecule released a game, nothing announced.

Maybe one or two of these will be at the state of play and release this year but even that seems optimistic. I worry that some of these studios will finally reveal their new projects and they'll still take a few more years to release.

A little bit of both keeping things tight and development issues.

ND wasted a few years on TLOU Online, before it got cancelled.
Bend lost a couple years of not having an approved project after Days Gone.
Asobi will be there or at Summer Games Fest, I am sure of that.
Sucker Punch will probably be at the September showcase.
Media Molecule spent a few years supporting Dreams.

Next year is supposed to be a big year though.

This is why I keep harping on this though the past few weeks. Even pretty straight forward sequels like God of War Ragnarok are taking 4-5 years.

All the rumors seems 110% certain that asobi is announcing astro bot for this year.  We should see it tomorrow i expect.

Releases have been few and far between but from announcement to release has been short.

I would expect we also hear about concord tomorrow if that is true to its 2024 release window from the announcement trailer.  ...really want to know why a burger was this thing they choose to focus on.   Has to have meaning right??

Really what Sony needs to do is be finding the next Sucker Punch,Guerrilla and Insomniac. Feck knows where they'll find these studios though. It seems incredibly hard to find up and coming independent devs with massive potential these days.

Yeah that's true. House marque at least made a good quality game. Hopefully they can find more financial success with their next game.
Arrowhead transitioned into AAA wonderfully, and hell divers now is a huge success. Sony should definitely try buy them or keep working with them.

The issue it's almost impossible to set up a new studio and have it work on an AAA game.now days, it's usually more than a new studio can handle. They need to work on a smaller game like kena, Ori, or something before growing into AAA. But I think that's not too bad a strategy for Sony as those games would fill up their line up and add more constant releases. But it seems sony isn't doing that approach much and sadly focusing more on bigger releases

Me to, because I enjoy linear 8 hour games. Not everything needs to have side quests and open world.

I'd really like if they did 20$-40$ dollar AA games. Have a good quality but don't be too huge of a game.

Cool that firesprite and housemarque are on the single player side. I could have easily seen them in the evolving/multi-genre block.

Ratchet and Clank and Sackboy Adventure weren't that long ago. Wonder if they count as part of this change or were they from the before times?

Horizon

It's good Sony is branching out into more family friendly titles. They should do an advertisement this year with Ratchet, Sackboy, Astro Bot and Lego Horizon and have a family bundle with Astro Bot.

I will say Team Asobi seem to be rising from the ashes of Japan Studio and delivering a far more impactful game than the likes of GR and Knack. I'd love to see Asobi expand after Astro Bot and tackle a Zelda style game but for younger audiences in mind.

ratchet and clank likely wasn't viewed specificaly as a "family" title.   it has better family appeal than most sony titles these days but it was likely viewed more of a fan-service game.   i'm pretty sure a huge part of R&C buyers are guys like me.   old and long-time fans.

sackboy wasn't a very good titles for kids tbh.   visually yes.   but only 2 of the 7 worlds are easy enough for a kid to play.   it gets really hard really quick and the way they deal with dying is pretty punishing.  i know it's in line with legacy LBP but it's not kid friendly when the levels are so hard for a kid.
