Sony took a ~$60 loss at launch on PS4. This was after the disaster PS3 where they really needed to recover losses and the company as a whole was struggling. If they were going to play it safe and try and make a profit it would have been then.

But they didn't, despite XB1 being $499 and weaker they still went with $399 and took the loss. PS+ was much smaller, digital revenue and recurrent user spending was magnitudes lower. Return on investment for attracting a customer was miles lower 7 years ago, and 7 years ago they thought it was worth a $60 loss at launch.

So what now. Now Sony is doing way better on the whole, now every customer is much more valuable to attract and spends a lot more with PS+ and MTX. Now they can afford to take a bigger hit as PS4 is the most profitable console of all time and PS is seeing a record year. Now they just play it safe and don't take a loss? Sure Jan. If Sony try and break even on PS5 and aren't competitive with xbox pricing its the weirdest and stupidest business move that the playstation division has ever made.

The safest bet and most logical thing is that Sony will take an even bigger loss per console now, as they can afford it and its better to try and attract as many people as possible. PS5 at $500 would be less of a loss than PS4. $550+ PS5 would be a profit. Even if it does wildly happen, only an idiot would predict a $500+ PS5. And if you predict that and you turn out right you're not smart, Sony are stupid.

Quote from: ShinobiI think Microsoft has built some fantastic hardware with Series X & S and I think they're great value for the tech. But I've noticed weird concern every so often as if anything Xbox does is suddenly something Sony has to respond to. They're the clear market leader, they have a massively loyal audience waiting to jump to PS5, and they've got a ton of stuff to work with in the lead up to launch, not to mention first party tentpole projects later down the line. This isn't warrior speak at all but Sony just...pretty much owns the room when they decide to talk.

And they'll talk when they're good and ready.

Fair enough. I still want some info.

PS5 price may be changing — thanks to Xbox Series X | Tom's Guide

Claims there was an original price considerably more expensive.

But Sony will likely be putting $399/$499.

The gamereactor article is from yesterday. I think what's the most likely story here is that Sony were always thinking 399/499 but only a few at the top knew it and now xbox price has been announced they're happy with the PS5 price point and have got ready to announce it by letting more people know.

Yep, but I'll take any rumor that backs up $399/$499.

Look here's one now

My reliable source is my Sony Uncle.

If it were legitimate, I wonder if someone was hearing the PS5 cost to Sony, and then they started hearing the PS5 consumer price.

I doubt it's legitimate. But I'm so desperate for news, I'd take just about anything.

Even insider Kitler.   8)

i have just learned from a reliable source sony was always going to price the ps5 and ps5 DE between $399 and $499.  However they were putting out false intelligence that they'd be releasing between $499 and $599 hoping they could get ms to publicly commit to a $599 price for xbsx and thus win the generation decisively in the first 12 months of the generation.

Was PS5 Digital'S SSD confirmed?

Yes.

Both systems are 100% identical except for disc drive and external casing.

Also speaking of the new thread title, I bet a lot of people will have difficulty with the PS5 stand. Will have jokes and memes about not knowing how to put the console on its side correctly.

Will it actually be an issue? No, but the power and eject buttons on PS4 aren't an issue yet they've caused a lot of confusion lol.

the-pi-guy

I kind of like what they've done with the stand.

Including the stand and using it for both orientations means:
-Not having to sell 4 different SKUs of stands (in fact, not needing to sell any stands separate, except as replacement?  Probably rare)
-less likely to lose it

Not a perfect strategy, but at least its better than XSX's stand...
