Xbox prices got leaked a full week before their planned reveal. We're now less than 2 days to PS5 and nothing is being said, not even any hints.

Sony doesn't have to tell people in advance of the show.

Also I'm so glad the console design wasn't leaked. That was the most hype moment of the year.

Launch models are fine, or at least will have issues unrelated to this.

This only affects price and availability.

Not even price, this is AMD's problem more than anything. Sony will have already agreed a price per chip with AMD, this just means Sony get to make fewer PS5s than they hoped. You wouldn't change long term price on a product only because initial yield was lower than expected.

Anyway this isn't too bad, it's still higher than PS4 and they will probably ramp up further in the rest of next year to make up for it.

This marches with the increased air freight, if the first few months of production were much lower than expected then its launch that would suffer, but the air freight basically moves the shipments forward a quarter.

PS4 shipped 4.5M and 3M in it's first two quarters. We might see something like 6M and 3.5M for PS5 if they do hit this production target.

But Sony needs be given more chips in order to get working ones.

What does this mean!?

Bloomberg has been super funky with their PS5 insights. Random huge leaks here and there. Does this cast doubt on the past ones, or does it confirm them since Sony never commented before?

I think it casts doubt on everything Bloomberg has said about PS5. We know nothing about the target production number or how production is actually going. Perhaps the $450 BOM report is now unreliable too.

I think Sony's statement most likely points to that the report of a lowered and then boosted target was wrong and they've just been going for their original target this whole time. We have no idea what that is, though.

Its worth noting that Nikkei reported this at the same time as Bloomberg:
Facebook and Sony ramp up output of gaming devices -
                Nikkei Asian Review

Bloomberg said 10m production by the end of the year, Nikkei said 9m. This was what was said about the time of the start of mass production, so this could be the plan Sony is sticking too. It would probably mean something like 13-14m produced by end of March (altough the report doesn't officially say 9m is by end of 2020).
