Quote from: Xevross on Dec 09, 2016, 12:02 AMYeah you're right. I'm fairly certain that sales will begin to slip away in UK, US and Japan but we don't know about elsewhere. It could be that sales continue strong in Europe and that would totally counteract the drop in those three countries. Its likely that this year will be the peak but how much it drops I have no idea
It's also important to consider release schedules of games. Would PS4 have sold better had it actually had a heavy hitting exclusive title in its holiday lineup for once? Like, say, GT Sport? How many people with standard PS4s bought PSVR instead of upgrading to PS4 Pro? I mean, it's obviously not hundreds of thousands but the question is still worth asking.

We also have a freaking loaded early 2017 right now. Probably the biggest early lineup we've seen so far this gen. Gravity Rush 2, Kingdom Hearts 2.8, Nioh, Horizon, MLB 17, Nier: Automata, Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5, Persona 5. Those are just the ones with release dates within the first 4 months. That doesn't even include Resident Evil 7, which I fully expect to do more for PS4 than anything else and possibly get the ball really rolling for PSVR.

We're moving into the part of the gen where Sony always shines. The second half. Year 3 and Beyond. This is when the big games come pouring out. This is when a lot of Sony's best work typically gets released. Will that still hold true? Who knows. History tells us yes. Will the games be enough to keep PS4 charging ahead to the finish line instead of limping? Who knows. History tells us yes. I've watched Sony long enough, through highs and lows, to know that they are the one console company you can trust to end strong and not simply drag a carcass into the next gen.

Quote from: Raven on Dec 08, 2016, 11:45 PMAndrew House already talked about a 6-year cycle. The 7th gen was an exception in more ways than one. Between 4 to 6 years is the standard rate that the generations change. We don't normally have hardware selling at $400 three or four years after the generation started. People are used to prices being much lower by now and not having to consider more expensive purchases.
That's kinda crazy.

The PS4 slim is effectively the same price the PS3 was at the end of last generation. PS5 rumors will probably start popping up next year.

It makes sense. Between him mentioning a 6-year cycle, the Pro being consistently referred to as a mid-gen console refresh, and Naughty Dog stating they were only making one more PS4 game, which we now know is TLOU 2, it seems 2019 is an incredibly safe bet. I think both Sony and Microsoft realized that going so long without new hardware, even a refresh, did damage to the image of the console market. By the time the 360 and PS3 were replaced, most games were looking or running god awful compared to PC. Only their best studios could squeeze just enough to make you not notice you were playing on an ancient device. A mid-gen refresh only mitigates so much. A new console is needed earlier than 7 or 8 years later.

Way to early.  Just look at how beatiful many ps4 titles are.  It can easily last another 4 years.  Easily.  And then it will be time for a $400 upgrade to the ps5.

It could, but should it?

Last gen was too long.

We got the ps4 pro to satisfy the graphic whores.  The industry in times of increased development costs needs longer gens.  Not a new one every 5/6 years.

As I said,  just look at how good looking base ps4 games can look.  That's good enough for another 4 years.

We want the ps5 to be a major leap.  To do legit 4k gaming at a $400 price point. If they rush a ps5 out in 2018/19 after a 5/6 year gen you're going to cut too many corners.

2020 when the tech has be properly advanced release a true 4k machine that will legitimately satisfy the fans for 8 years after.  Not an almost 4k machine in 2018/19 leaving people wanting for a ps5 pro 2 years after.

Regardless I think the tech for 4k is rapidly advancing and the ps5 will be a joy to behold. 4k TV'S will be super cheap and super mainstream by then too.

Xbox 360 had 8 years.  2005-2013
PS3 has 7 years.  2006-2013

I prefer my gens to last 5-6 years.  Personally I would rather a gen last too long than one that doesn't last long enough.

I'd rather not spend 300$ or more on a system, that won't be getting games in 2 or 3 years.

It still feels too early for a PS5.  PS4 doesn't really have the library to leave like that.  But that's my opinion.

and this gen "disappointed" because games didn't look/feel different enough to feel like a new gen even after the 8/9 year wait.  games are releasing at a snails pace these days too,.. budgets are too large as they are that even more expensive budgets to fill up even more powerful hardware isn't going to solve any of the problems people have with gaming these days.

besides,.. name 5 pc games that look better than what is on console.  the whole pc graphics are better than console graphics has faded away because no one will make a pc exclusive these days (that doesn't look worse then what consoles can do).  all pc graphics joking has is resolution and frame rate.   fudge that noise,.. not worth another new $400 device to me.  if i wanted that i'd get a ps4 pro....

iterative hardware!!
