The Witcher 2 was one of the best looking titles of its time though
Except it's not.  Flat textures every where.  Basic global lighting, nothing local.  Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 shame all over it and those were released 2 years prior.  Though, I'm sure the scale of the game has everything to do with it.  Not easy doing open world.  So Apples to Oranges I guess.  How about, best looking open world game then?

Lol no way dude. I played all of those and The Witcher 2 was on a whole different level technically. It may not have been perfect but ffs you could even use "ubersample" if you had the juice, effectively a look into the future of graphics.

BUT, I did say "best looking" not "greatest graphics technology" or something.
Also, the game wasn't open-world. Well, it had open spaces and when you progressed you got to new places but there was not this one huge world you could roam around in.

the screen in the OP looks off to me.  i think it is because the mountains in the background have more detail than the castle in the foreground.

still not sure why anyone is getting hyped about the witchers graphics (on consoles).  perhaps it is amazing on PC but on consoles it will look worse than the likes of the order or uncharted due to being a large open world game.

I think the hype for its graphics, even on PC, is deflating a bit. Turned out it just looks a bit better than W2 in an open world, not the revolution we were expecting after the first reveal.

it's just not fair to compared open world games to non-open world games graphically.  the price of open world is a significant hit to graphics.  it is mandatory.

if you want to judge the witcher 3 than judge it fairly.  this is probably the current highest graphics open world game to compare it against and i think the witcher compares favorably against it:

Alright, what made it look so good?  First things I noticed when I first booted it up was the terrible texture work(environments) and overall low polygon environments.  The lighting is as basic as you can get.  There's no local lighting blended in with the global lighting (Which is actually very difficult to do and few games do it).  The shading model is very basic.  There's no material shading, no skin shading, the light is just "blooming" on everything. The texture work is worse than Uncharted 2's.  It's way below God of War 3.  What's it doing that's so advanced?  Character models are good, but nothing spectacular.

1. Much higher resolution. 2. Much better AA. 3. Ubersampling, which is effectively another layer of smoothness and AA. 4. Much higher quality DOF and motion blur.

How so what?
The picture was messing up with the thread, at least it stopped on Chrome, Internet Explorer still worked.

Put in spoilers!
I don't know what the issue was.
The image was slowing down chrome.  The whole page would be unresponsive and it would just load.
But now even looking at the image doesn't do anything.

I'm still torn about getting this game. I won't get it at release anyway, because its during my exams. It does look great
