.

a horror movie isnt fun, its entertaining. getting scared isnt really a fun thing, but it can be exiting.

a sad movie or game isnt really fun either, but still entertaining. thats my point.

fun is a specific type of entertainment. They are not interchangeable

So is Sonic generations, or whatever that 3d one was in gen 6

I think "engaging" would be a better word than "entertaining" as the latter and "fun" overlap with each other quite a bit. Games can be both fun and engaging, either one, or neither.

Some of my personal examples --

Fun + Engaging: Uncharted 2 (Great gameplay and story. The multiplayer is also very fun)
Fun + Not engaging: Just Cause 2 (I basically just screw around, but it's still fun)
Not fun + Engaging: Silent Hill 2 (I don't like getting scared, but the writing was amazing)
Not fun + Not engaging: Sonic 2006 (The bugs, poor level design, and poor camera kills both aspects)

What? I dont understand what you are asking lol - or are you saying Sonic generations is bad? o.o

The 3D sonic games in generation 6 were Sonic Adventure 1, 2, and Heroes (also Shadow the Hedgehog).

Sonic Generations is a 7th gen Sonic game. 7th gen is the one that had the Sonic games on the Wii...that were....also not fun or entertaining :(

I enjoyed it - but ya it had some pretty bad designs lol

What did you think of SA2? I thought it was improved a whole lot more than the first one.

Neverplayed. Sonic Adventure is the only Sonic game I've tried.

You poor soul. That is horrible way to start that series lol.

If you were to become interested in ever playing the series again I recommend Sonic the hedgehog 1, 2 and 3/knuckles first.

SA2 plays a whole lot different from SA1 so I recommend that - Its my favorite in the entire series.

CD is enjoyable too but some people dont like it due to the fact of the time traveling aspect of the game is a departure from normal sonic games.

I recommend staying away from the Wii/7th gen Sonic games except for Generations - probably the only good sonic game that came out in the last gen (excluding The Hedgehog 4 episodes 1 and 2).

A game is an experience.
All the aspects of that experience make up the quality.

The story, the gameplay, the sound, etc.

It all makes up the experience.
Is fun==quality?
Certainly not, but a fun game is usually more indicative that the game is quality over not being fun.
A game being fun has a higher quality in that department than a game that isn't fun.

Lots of reviewers separate their reviews into departments like replay value, story, graphics, because putting all these together, and certainly more factors determine the subjective quality of a game.

Debating the difference between fun or entertaining is at best, semantical, or at worst, it can be silly.
It's really a matter of "do you find the game to be enjoyable?"
(The internet says Entertainment is something someone else does for you, fun is something you do for yourself."  So it's really a silly discussion).
