i don't like to play too many games at a time.  i had to finish my infamous replay before starting the order.   that said it took my 2 weeks.  it's not a 5 hour game imo.  i died quite a lot even on normal.  the game was really challenging at bits.  they did a good job of making it so you couldn't just sit and wait for your life to recover between popping out of cover to plough through the game.  the shot gun specialists and grenade launcher specialists where certainly something to be scared of.

now that the order is complete i can think about starting bloodborne.   kind of feel like finishing dust first though.  i got maybe half way through that before getting distracted.

finished the game. maybe around 7 hours of playtime? not sure, it doesn't tell you (which is something i hate, love farcry 4's way of telling you). obviously there are spoilers in this, so read at your own risk

SPOILERS

what i have to say is, that Ready at Dawn need to take a very very hard look at Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3, and The Last of Us for their next game. The Order 1886 is a good game, but other than Music and Graphics EVERY part of the game needs to be improved for the next one to be considered a worthy game.

Gameplay - The gunplay is fantastic, honestly, its precise but hard, its satisfying and steady and its smooth. shooting from over the edges was awesome because it didnt give you cross hairs unless you hit the target, which was a really awesome thing honestly, it made you shoot like a mad man at times just to push the enemies back. and if you are good, you can use it like a pro and hit efficiently.

HOWEVER and thats a big however, traversal needs an upgrade, i couldnt cover behind basic things, sometimes it got in the way, really, i couldnt cover behind a table? really? i couldnt jump over an edge or table i needed to walk around it? the gameplay needs to feel fluid and quick, i need to be able to get to cover fast and move forward quickly, that gets in the way.

QTE's- i dont mind QTE's but this game had way too much, they need to develop a proper melee system like in TLoU or the very least UC3, it would improve the gameplay a lot and open up a lot of options for the game. the stealth would also greatly benefit from a proper melee system. next game they need to try avoid them as much as possible IMO.

Lycan Fights- awful.. just awful. they run at you, press X, and shoot. if they hit you they just run away? and repeat? it doesnt make sense! my least favorite part of the game and could have been done SO much better, its just bad honestly. again, if they developed a proper Melee system this could have been A LOT better! what sadness me the most is that they completely ignore what they showed us in the reveal trailer. lycan's trying to sneak up on you, climbing, hiding in the shadows and smoke and jumping at you. imagine if the gameplay was like the reveal trailer and IF a lycan gets to you you fight it with a good combat system? would be awesome.

Lycan Boss Fights - awesome. honestly they have a good base for a melee system here, they need to improve it a lot in the next game but those boss fights were intense. i dont see the complaining about the final boss, it was a good fight and i enjoyed it, was pretty intense and it was great fun to play. they NEED to build on this, its well done IMO and if the system can expand to be a part of the normal gameplay through out the game, it can really make a difference.

Graphics- Holy fudge. this game looks good.

Sound- great sound, HOLY fudge THE MUSIC, and i really really liked the enemy AI interactions with each other, telling each other where you are and stuff like that.

Story- ill get to this tomorrow, now i need to shower.

so i watched a documentary about jack the ripper just now so i can understand more about the character, so it got me in the mood to do this. the big thing about the story that bothered me, was being seamless. the fade in -fade out transaction just kept killing the mood for me, we just got to point A to point B with a transaction most of the times. like when we were outside the hospital and needing to get on the ship. fade in fade out and wala!! we are there, they didnt even let us see how we got there, it kind of killed the immersion.

for example, in the GoW games (specifically number 3 from what i remember). you as kratos moved from place to place, you felt the journey being crossed, you fell or entered an area and exited the other, sometimes returning to the same place, it gave that sense of journey and discovery, that you are crossing from place to place and need to fight through enemies to do so. in the order it felt like a transition to transition kind of scenario, thats why i said RaD should take a good strong look at Uncharted and TLoU, it did a great job at explaining that and doing so, it gave that seamless transition between levels, in the order 1886 it just didnt feel like that.

another thing, The Order needs a system like Naughty Dogs Dynamic Object Traversal System, which lets the entire level move during gameplay. in the ship mission, instead of the cut scene of the explosion, then finding yourself on the ground, it could have been a lot cooler if the explosion happened during gameplay, the ship starts falling and you feel it, you try and find your way to a safer place for when the ship crashes, the entire level starts rotating down and you have to slide down, fall into objects or doors and hold on to them, maybe enemies in the way trying to find cover at the same time as well as shoot at you, the level keeps rotating downwards until bamn! the plane crashes in realtime, and you have to go find malory. it would have been A LOT cooler that way instead of a cut scene than a fade in fade out transition. again, also talks about the seamless transitions i spoke about earlier. some parts of the game could have been cool if they did stuff like that.

what i think the next game needs more is trust, for the devs to have trust in them selfs and trust in the player.

what i been by trust in them selfs and the players? well RaD need to trust that they dont have to have complete control of everything, they need to trust the systems they built and just let go and not try control every moment. have trust in the cover system and let the players take cover behind anything they want, not just a few specific locations to cover behind. build upon the melee system they have for boss fights and trust that players will learn it and learn any complications it might have, and most importantly trust that they would like it. not every moment needs to be controlled, let the players create their own and use the systems that the devs build. trust that they can have a fun cinematic experience without everything being on a tight leash, TLoU and Uncharted prove that this is possible IMO.

overall the game is a 7.8/10. thing is though, i had fun and at no point was i saying "ughh, this is boring". it was a good journey, one that i hoped would be better honestly, but its a good start for the franchise, a good base, but it needs a lot of improvement for the second. i hope sony believes in RaD and gives them the support to do so, because RaD have a good base here, they just need to work on the shortcomings.

Yeah, covering behind some things was a bit awkward because it didn't really work.  There were moments in the game that I was thinking, really I can hide behind this, but not that?  What the heck.
Agree with everything that you put here.  Now you have to read my review!

Yeah, the only thing with that would be the cover thing.  That would be really sweet even now though, especially with some of the guns.  :D

The order got a photo mode today, I'll have to turn it on later and play around, but people seem to be doing some pretty cool stuff with it.
