Why aren't there more games that support piracy?

I'm not really a fan of Assassin's Creed, but man did I love Black Flag!

This game was really successful too, yet pirate games are still super rare. Think we might see more in the future, or is it just a dead genre?

What other pirate games are there? Also, pirates are cool but games on them are not. One shot guns and shaming rusty sword fights? How would you make that exciting?

Imagine Mass Effect, but with a pirate ship!!! That'd be cool right! Going around building up your crew until a final battle against the British.

Lol at the title. I LOVED Black Flag, its my favourite AC game. Unity took a huge step backwards unfortunately. More games involving pirates with a big focus on ship combat would be much appreciated. Black Flag did it extremely well.

I think its the fact that most of them are associated with point and click or simulation/strategy games.

But I do agree, we need moar!

i played an NES game about controlling a submarine during a skirmish and sinking boats... It sucked.

Well this would be before submarines were common.

It would also be for current gen. I just remembered that game sucking so bad. It sucked so bad I didn't know how to move the submarine. The buttons didn't do a dang thing

lulz.

i like pirates but they just don't support next gen gameplay.  thats why all the big franchises are in space/future themed.

Why not space pirates?!

I didn't play black flag, but honestly it probably is a highly underrated era for AAA games as there are many options. There was a section in one of the Sly Cooper games that you piloted a pirate ship and had to fight other ships with you cannons and how you steered it was a lot of fun.
