What did it say about the "HPU"?

The device has a custom chip built to handle motion tracking and stuff like that. Makes sense, but the marketing department is playing it up as the next big thing and calling it the holographic proccessing unit.

Marketing on the inside and the outside!

I can't even think of the practical applications AR has for most gaming situations. It's the same problem I had with people touting voice commands as the future. There are maybe a couple scenarios where that works well or is preferable and even those scenarios exist pretty much because a developer forced the situation instead of creating a game that avoided it or utilized a more effective means.

AR or gaming is doa. Thats why VR is for. But for work applications it's awesome.

Eh even for work options it has issues.

I'm making a thread slamming it.

Yeah wow actually hololens has bigger train wreck potential than I was thinking.

It's not just deceptive, but flat out scam level (most likely).

I'm expecting that depending on how well it works, I see a few possibilities.
Doesn't work at all: It'll get swept under the rug, we won't hear anything about it anymore.  And they won't respond to questions.
Kinda works: It'll still get swept under the rug.  Won't see it for a very long time, and any glimpses will be something otherwise unrelated.
Works well: Well, you know what'll happen.

I suppose I should ask this question since I have only taken a passive interest since its announcement but is this thing something they're saying is coming soon or was it clearly a concept piece like Illumiroom where people were mistakenly treating it as if it's on the way?

They said it was coming within the timeframe of windows 10.
I expect it to go Illumiroom though.

agreed about AR gaming being doa.   ...very few ar games exist but i've played a few.   ar just breaks the fundamental reason of why i like games/movies/books.  i like being drawn into a new world that is completely unlike my boring little room.  even realist games put me in the roll of something i'd never do irl like being a military solider and hero.  having a game playout in my gaming room just sounds terribly boring with one exception,.. viewing naked people.

there are probably a few exceptions that would be cool but as a rule,.. i'd rather be in the world of some fantastical place completely unlike here.

as far as other applications go the only examples i've seen are video chat (which is just as easily done without AR, better probably because i don't want the person on the other end of the line wearing a face covering visor) and the google maps thing where direction on how to get to an address is overlayed unto the path i'm suppose to be going.   neither sounds worth much of my money.
