Daaamnnnnnn

Gonna flop?

Or are people gonna love it and it becomes a cult classic?

this close to GTA and a million other games,.. I think reviews could kill this.

maybe word of mouth can save it if the game is actually good and reviews are unfairly targeting it due to physical disc drama.

read through a few reviews.

some of the worst scores are coming from the biggest names in game reviews.   the best scores from sites I never heard of.

seems to me the theme of the bad scores is "linear game design" and "not innovative, genre redefining"

they just sound jaded to me. not day-1 or anything but I'm still in down the road.

The review i watched was way worse than just linear game design. It's that it's bad linear game design.

Also I had no clue this game was linear till yesterday ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I knew it was somewhat linear but figured it was still fairly open. Insomniac isn't a linear game dev. At least for a while. This should have been open world like spider man/batman.

It being linear shouldn't be an auto reduction in scores. That's just dumb. Especially if you say it's still decently solid.

Idk I'm excited to play it though

QTEs are not failable. Combat is overly simple, button masher stuff.

Some weird design decisions like scent lines and guiding systems in a linear game.

Lots of weird stuff, like there is a QTE auto complete, but this apparently just removes the slow down mechanic during QTE's, and the QTEs will auto complete successfully no matter what.

Stealing this picture from Era

Apparently the trail setting in accessibility just adds another green direction:

Some of this feels like they just used the open world mechanics, and didn't account for it being a linear game.
Some of this is just super bizarre.

Not that it really matters, but the accessibility menu is kind of bad.

I like this guy, still like his reviews, not even he was happy with this (Still gave it a 8/10, for whatever reason).  I also watched his Suicide Squad review, which he liked.  The fact that he was complaining about the story and Wolverine's models and didn't mind what was in Suicide Squad...

I'm guessing all that stuff they tried to remove in the accessibility settings are far to engrained to actually get rid of them.  They probably just tried to make it less bad.  I'm guessing someone is getting fired over this game.  I don't even mean the writers.  This somehow passed their internal reviews and someone is panicking at Insomniac to rush out patches that don't do anything.  Like, someone wasn't reviewing this game and I don't think Totoki, who made it a point about having more aggressive game reviews, is going to like what happened here.

This is my nonsensical armchair belief.

I feel like insomniac Games strength is in systems. Where they seem to have a very easy time backpatching games. Where they very quickly added a bunch of updates to Spider-Man after making it work in ratchet & clank. Redoing the Spider-Man model so that it's easier for them to map the motion capture.

Similar with Spider-Man and Wolverine they have a lot of systems for how to navigate the open world and a lot of accessibility features. And they've applied a lot of those here even though it doesn't seem to make sense for this game design.

Where is I feel like Naughty Dog really prides themselves in manually touching up animations and stuff like that.  Naughty Dog does have good systems, so don't get me wrong. But they're not the studio that would put out a Spider-Man Remaster, Spider-Man Miles Morales and Ratchet and Clank out within 7 months.

Kind of ranting about this because I saw Wolverine cutscene where he is supposed to be raging out and I think was supposed to rip somebody in half but that's not how it looked. It did not look very good. Felt like it they must have done motion capture and then not really take it any further than that.  That's kind of why I'm thinking about Naughty Dog because I feel like they would not do something like that.

There is just a lot in here that feels like they at some point either wanted to make it an open world game or the developers just had a role like this is the guy that designs the signs to point in a direction in Spider-man, so that's what he's doing in the Wolverine even though it doesn't really make sense for this game.

There just seems to be a lot in here that would 100% make sense for an open world Spider-Man game but doesn't really make sense in a linear Wolverine game. I would guess if you're willing/ able to overlook the hand holding that would be more normal in an open world game that this would be a good time for you.

I'm 90% sure they scrapped everything they were working on about a year and a half ago, maybe even 2 years ago, and threw a game together.  It tracks with most thrown together linear games.

Played a few hours yesterday. The combat is brutal and pretty fun. Nothing amazing, but not really like spider man had the deepest and amazing combat either. The scent trail and the visual audio cues for logan's abilities are kind of in your face. So, I get the complaint. If they just toned them down or made it a toggle button like the last of us' listen mode, I don't think it would be as hated.

But it sure does look and run great though. Will see how the story goes.

If you like it, that's all that matters! Hope it stays good.

I saw the water in this game. Maybe you're not supposed to go in the water so that's why it looks so bad, but if it's intended then this is the worst water in decades lol.

So the systems are hit or miss too.

No way. It would be better if that was the case lol.

When was the first time they said it wasn't open world?

Apparently only 3 months ago.

And it's rather weird because they sound non-committal about it.

QuoteMarvel's Wolverine is a more linear game than Spider-Man - don't expect a city to explore or a base to nose around in

Quote"Logan is a character who's constantly being driven forward, either by some urgent need, a sense of duty, or trying to seek out things in his past," Daly says. "He doesn't really get anchored into one space and wander around. One of the things I feel like we've done a good job with is the missions in the story have this almost comic book kind of pacing of action and intrigue that constantly moves forward at a fast pace."

In other words, it's a more linear, level-by-level experience. "We wanted variety in our levels," Daly continues, "so some of them have microcosms of that experience, where it is a little bit more open and you have some agency, but there's not a home base that you keep returning to to try and complete everything there. It is really a story with a lot of forward momentum."

Structurally it's funneled, then, but where there is some variation is in the levels themselves. We see this briefly in the gameplay trailer when Logan picks up the scent of Jean Grey, who he later teams up with, and as he skulks his way around the environment and takes out the enemies who are there. It's all very action-heavy, but apparently there's more besides.
