the runback is very soulslike.   I like it in souls but hated it in hollow knight.

I think the difference is in hollow knight I had a lot of bosses last about 5 seconds on the first encounter.  souls is slow enough you can play defensively to learn the movements.  not always true for hollow knight.

I've put something like 21 hours into Hollow Knight so far.  I'd wager I've explored like 75% of the game.

I was stuck for like 4 hours with not a lot of progress, but got over the hump.

I think the game would be much better if you could just fast travel between any of the benches.

There's a lot of backtracking when you get new abilities. There's a lot of backtracking when you're trying to figure out where to go.

I looked later and I was actually ~25 hours in.

Hour 1-17 was pretty great.

Hour 17-22 was somewhat frustrating. Basically made no progress during that time. Mostly because I didn't know where to go. I would check different ends of the map, and didn't have the abilities to pass whatever barrier was there.

Hour 22-28 is back to being pretty great.  Beat a few bosses I was stuck on.

There was a long stretch in there (especially during that slump, where Hollow Knight felt way more like a platformer, and it is a fun platformer. But I also don't love platformers that much - they're fine, but they're not close to my favorite genre. )

I think I've explored like 85% of the map now. - (which might not actually be a good measure. Lots of different sections to the map, some are pretty small.)

This is a lot of fun.

I've tried playing Hollow Knight 3 times, and I kept getting stuck around the 6 hour point. Was definitely interested in the game, but it just didn't feel like it was clicking.

I feel more excited about playing games again, and that's really awesome. The last time was Astro Bot, and I'm not sure what it was before that.

Starting to feel stuck again. This time because I'm having trouble with bosses.

It's that hard? Not the game where you just try it a few times and figure the boss out?

I'd describe the game as 2D Mario crossed with Souls.
