Quote from: Legend on Apr 20, 2024, 05:48 PMOpen worlds when just used to select a mission suck. Modern ones are built like themeparks so you have plenty of activities/distractions along the way, but it's still just activity selection.

There have been true open world games. Rain World and Death Stranding both use traversal as gameplay for example. Minecraft like games would count too imo.
Elden Ring does have plenty of things in the middle. There's even boss fights in the middle of nowhere. Random NPCs.

I personally think Skyrim's open world is good (even if it's not good for Kitler).
Elden Ring is like the antithesis of Skyrim's open world in a ton of different ways.

yeah but to me they aren't really designed to be "open world".   they are always tethered to a location and if you step outside of the boundaries they de-aggro and reset.  the design of the bosses are the same as if it was a very linear game with a "boss room".    ...expect even worse because
1. the open world area never makes the boss fight more interesting.   it's always a boring wide open field.
2. the bosses are all easy to cheese.   you can just leave the aggro area to reset the boss.  the bosses didn't even reset their life bar so the could easily be cheesed via a quick attack and run.    aka boring and worse than the previous games.

Just finished god of war Ragnarok. What a game. Absolutely amazing. Though I do think I like God of war 2018 better. Either way. God of war is the GOAT gaming franchise

Yeah!

God of War, and Souls have been my favorite of this and last gen.

From the souls games I've only played Bloodborne. Bloodborne was amazing. But God of war is just the GOAT IMO

I don't know if anyone has played Mushroom Wars.

I like the game and I also kind of hate it.

It's a real time strategy game where you have hubs basically. There are a few different kinds of hubs - villages that make people, towers that attack at a range, and forges which increase attack.

All of that is good.

What I find immensely frustrating is that the game has a morale score. The morale score massively affects how much damage and how fast the soldiers are. An army 100 and a morale score of 5 can wipe out an army of 280 with a morale score of 0.

Makes sense. Those 280 soldiers could be fleeing the battle.

I played Botany Manor. Super simple puzzle game but it was decent.

I finished immortals of aveum. It's an alright game, could have been better. It's an alright game. Wouldn't honestly recommend it though.

Yep absolutely agree. It has a lot of good things about it. The combat was pretty good too. The soundtrack was pretty killer too. I know the studio had layoffs but I'm not sure if the entire studio is closed or if they are going to be working on a sequel because if done right a sequel could be their uncharted 2 moment

The weakest thing was the characters. They all pretty much sucked.

The gameplay was fun, but I feel like it could still use improvement. It was decent though. The enemies could have been better too, specially with some being bullet sponges

yeah most of the characters I didn't care for. A couple were alright. I definitely agree about the enemies.  Some of them were massive bullet sponges.  I turned the difficulty down at one point because it was getting ridiculous on some of them.

As a base starting point for what could be a really good franchise it works, but in this day that's usually not good enough.

Yeah I agree, it started a base for a really good game. The sad thing though is I think the studio shut down. I've read the game simply didn't make any money

Playing Toki Tori 2. It's pretty simple but has some clever stuff.

The map is so bad though. I feel really lost, just moving forward randomly. Maybe I shouldn't have used my noggin and gone to important areas early. It's a metroidbrainia.

Legend

I played a short hike. It was nice. I purposefully rushed things towards the end so I'd have a bit of a challenge with not enough golden feathers. Made it fun.
