i got throw hillcrest and finding strings last night / 5am this morning because i couldn't sleep.

first off to comment on the play from the day before.

something really didn't sit right with me with the introduction of shamblers.  it's been a long time but i remember the first game feeling pretty definitive about what the types of infected there are and they lore clearly indicated it was entirely about how long the infected person was infected.  i realize from a pure video game perspective adding new enemy types to a sequel is pretty standard but from a story/lore perspective it feels like cheating.  like, i guess i could understand an infected for an even longer time than the bloaters being a thing and consistent with the lore.  ..but what's the explanation for a shambler?!?

hillcrest was a hell of a chapter for me.  ND has always done a good job with pacing but that was a hell of a long run of killing people.  i must have killed at least 50 people in a row.  i'm not one to critique uncharted for it's mass murder but this chapter felt very mass murdery.  also the addition of guard dogs was a pretty good addition.  also holy hell are they vicious.  the following of the scent was a great gameplay idea that really messed me up for a lot of deaths.    ...until i remembered i have trap explosives.  that was very effective and i wish i had figured that out faster.

finally i really liked the bit of time playing with a sniper rifle i had in finding strings.   like specifically the "adjust for gravity" part of the gameplay.   has any other game done that?   i'm totally use to sniper rifles 1) being kind of OP and 2) only compensating via sway.   was way more fun to have a relatively steady scoping with an unknown adjustment for gravity be the penalty for killing something from such a great distance they have no chance to fight back.   it's a good thing this chapter had infinite ammo because i needed it...

The guard dogs are great. They really try to make you feel bad for killing them.

I don't recall gravity being a thing for snipers in tlou2, outside of one spot that I thought was scripted. I guess I never used snipers except when forced.

i'm used to video games having a sniper rifle like this:

obviously each game has a different cosmetic to it but the point is there is a cross hair and if you put the enemies head in the exact middle you'll always score a head shot no matter what.

i couldn't find a screenshot of TLoU specifically but their scope looked a bit like this:

where what i'm trying to point out is there are multiple cross hairs.  this image is probably easier to talk to:

the cross hair you use is a function of how far the target is from you.  the further away the target the lower the cross hair you need to use to hit your target.  which is all based on this science that is basic enough for this forum that i think this image explains it all well enough.

anywho. i'm not going to say TLoU is the only game to ever do sniper rifles accurate but it's certain the only one i've played.   it was refreshing.

oh I specifically remember the sniper from tlou2, I just only used it for one section and I thought it was hardcoded just for that section.

Sniper Elite of course has bullet drop. MGSV does too but I think it was a bit more like a punishment for shooting out of range.

i only have just passed the section you are probably thinking of.   i don't have it as a main weapon.  not yet at least.  could be hardcoded for the section but regardless it felt good to play with.
