It's basically a meme opening.

The usual opening for chess is to "develop" most of your pieces, and castle.

You lose your ability to castle, and you lose time.

Two AI's playing against each other.^

It actually ends in a tie at the end, despite the title.

But Stockfish somehow misses an absurd forced draw. And you instantly see Stockfish's evaluation go from winning to a draw.

Older paper but pretty dang cool that it can "solve" chess without any search of future states. Is this actually a great score or is it only meh?

Also I was thinking of rubiks cube solving vs chess solving. Is there an equivalent of God's number? A guarantee that from any game state, black or white could force a win/tie in under X moves?

These scores are kind of meaningless in a vacuum, but slightly ahead of the best human. A lot worse than stockfish (3600+)

It's unknown.

Chess feels a little funky.

There's like a handful of players that are clearly better than everyone else in the world. These guys are going to win against anyone else 9 times out of 10.

But then there's 1 guy (Magnus Carlsen) in particular who seems to be notably better than those other people. Like he has impressive streaks where he wins against the others, without a loss.

I'm sure that's way more common than I'm aware of, I don't really follow any sports.

But it's also funny reading how the chess community responds to stuff he says.

He opted out of the world championship this year. He's been commenting on it.

Magnus: "I will stand by what I said earlier. Gukesh has generally not impressed me. So far Ding has done a little better than what we thought. But we probably didn't expect much. Gukesh has probably been a little bit worse"

QuoteMagnus looking down from Mount Olympus thinking

"These players are not close to me, so glad I didn't have to come down for this."

He's allowed to brag, and people are just generally like "yep, he's earned that brag".

Sad/funny thing is he's less toxic than some/most of the other people in the top 10.

I think the board could be improved. If you're going to bother locking in pieces to stop cheating, you should also stop your opponent from being able to freely move your pieces. Make it check which piece you have in the air and unlock only pieces that it could kill.

I'm surprised this has only been a flash game before. You'd think with all the various alternative chess games, a real time one would be pretty popular.

looks hectic and fun.  I agree with his premise that the worst part of chess is waiting for someone to move. I'm guilty of it too but I hate it when my opponent takes too long.

plus the electro magnets are cool.

would take a lot more work but it would be cool if the physical version could check for more than just who is picking up the piece.  was the move legal for the piece being played??   I can imagine in real time those mistakes could easily happen too.

Yeah refine it so the board is the only ref and players can just focus on their own actions. How would it "not allow" a move though? Would need to reverse the magnet and push away pieces I guess.

Also get rid of the wire in some way and I think it could easily catch on. Would bring a very different energy to matches.

well there could be a buzzer sound and you could make a rule about not moving any piece for 10 seconds after that or something.

but also don't let me remove the opponents piece from the board if my move isn't legal.

heck,..  once I pick up the piece you could even use those LEDs to highlight the legal moves.

If we're gonna overengineer this thing, let's make those LEDs directional so you and your opponent can see different things. Board would get pretty full of color if you're displaying cooldowns and valid moves for both players.

Also rules need to be defined about moving pieces not on a cooldown. Can you only pick one up at a time? 2? A fistful of pawns? While a piece is in the air is it off the board and invincible or is it taken if another piece moves to its og spot?
