Arkane Leon could still make another dishonored, but yeah I don't think I've expressed enough frustration at these closures.

Arkane Austin screwed up with redfall but they were a studio I really liked. I was so excited to see how they would bounce back from it and make a traditional immersive sim again. It doesn't matter if Microsoft killed them or if the studio had bleed its talent years ago, this just sucks.

why would MS let them?

the moves MS has been making is that of leaving behind the xbox platform and being a 3rd party.   the small prestigious games like hi fi rush are important to a platform owner but not to a 3rd party.   MS said in their statement:

QuoteToday I'm sharing changes we are making to our Bethesda and ZeniMax teams. These changes are grounded in prioritizing high-impact titles and further investing in Bethesda's portfolio of blockbuster games and beloved worlds which you have nurtured over many decades.  To double down on these franchises and invest to build new ones requires us to look across the business to identify the opportunities that are best positioned for success. This reprioritization of titles and resources means a few teams will be realigned to others and that some of our colleagues will be leaving us.

aka more fallout and elder scrolls and less anything else.   dishonored didn't sell well.   as long as MS owns it i think you should consider the IP dead.

QuoteI didn't think tapping into that warchest would lead to this

i'm not able to make memes but now all i can think about is some meme based on that statement using an image like this:

Arkane Austin was pitching a new single-player 'immersive sim', such as a new Dishonored.

Tango was pitching a sequel to Hi-Fi Rush.

I am glad gamepass is dying.

It sucks for many reasons and I personally really enjoy gamepass, but it's a bad foundation for the industry. Plus at least right now the damage is mostly constrained to Xbox. 5 years from now, everyone could have been stuck with money pit subscriptions.

the impact is biggest there but i think the damage is industry wide.  ps+ extra is not as bad but is like ~50% as bad.   at the very least i can say it has had a big impact on my personal spending.   not that i'm cheerleading spending more money but also i don't want the industry i love soo much to collapse.

That's what I mean. Everyone was feeling the pressure to move this way and if Microsoft kept the money faucet on for a few more years, we'd be risking a full collapse.

the quote doesn't quite match the headline but the headline definitely hit the mark in summarizing the quote...

Quote"We need smaller games that give us prestige and awards,"

holy sheet.

I'm surprised they didn't do something like Sony did with Astrobot. Shut the studio down but keep the smaller team around for a Hi Fi Rush sequel. Would have saved them from most of this bad pr if fanboys could equate it to "bad devs get the boot."

Also I was just thinking that it's crazy they shut down two studios simultaneously, plus alpha dog. Can't recall that ever happening before.

Fans can go back and forth between speculating the next batch of games to get ported and the next batch of studios to get closed  :P

Current speculation is ninja theory right after they port to ps5 and double fine.

Its painful to watch honestly.  Can't stop though...

I'm curious how well Hellblade 2 does, but considering its day 1 gamepass and its still a pretty niche game I doubt it will do well enough.  So i do fear that Ninja Theory might be in trouble.

Double Fine is a meh studio, imo.  The people there and Tim are really passionate about their work, but I feel like they have more of a cult following than anything.  I don't believe Psychonauts 2 was a raging success commercially.
