Sorry my second half of my post wasn't really thought out.

It's like there's enough separation that certain things can feel more palatable. Like Dragon Ball would probably look less appealing/less convincing if it looked more realistic.

And they don't have to be gory. When things are real, you're probably going to be expecting more realistic amounts of blood and more realistic guts for the same kind of content. You are expecting a beat up guy to have semi-realistic bruises. Whereas animation can look cute with bruises. There's certainly plenty of gory animation, but I feel like animation can get away with having less.

Gohan covered in bruises in Dragon Ball Z

This same imagery would probably be horrifying in real life.

Oppenheimer got 7 wins out of 13 nominations.

Dr. Pezus

And RDJr got his first. Really deserved it!

Just for fun.
IMDB Top 250 movies

I have the top 9 now. 8 of them in 4K, except for Shawshank Redemption.
13 of the top 15. 10 in 4K.

16 of the top 20, 13 in 4K.

23 of the top 50.

Anyone watch First Man?

Also what are some other good directors that I "should" be following?

Legend

It's good but not great imo.

Kinda niche but I like Martin Scorsese and Denis Villeneuve.

Other than? I maybe missed the ones you're already following.

David Fincher, Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, Miyazaki, Spielberg, Tarantino, Ridley Scott sometimes, Stanley Kubrick

You have a refined taste in directors so I get why you don't consider them niche. I'm just glad to know there is at least one other person that appreciates these unknown heroes of cinema.

I was just in general meaning niche directors I may not have heard of.

I have at least one movie from every director this far mentioned except for Ridley Scott.

The Martian is on my short list, though.

Legend

I'm excited for Civil War since it's directed by Alex Garland. Everyone loves Ex Machina but I also really loved Annihilation from him.

Hehe I guess they aren't very niche.

American Gangster, Black Hawk Down I felt was great too and obviously gladiator, Alien and Blade Runner.

Hehe I know that's a joke.

Denis really has been going under the radar though. I mean everyone knows about Dune but his last movies are:

Incendies - haven't seen but great reviews
Prisoners - superb imo
Enemy - good reviews, haven't seen
Sicario - haven't seen, very good reviews
Arrival - really good!
Blade Runner 2049 - superb imo
Dune - superb imo
Dune part 2 - still haven't seen but apparently amazing

$31 though...

Rango is such a weird movie. I saw it in theaters and thought it sucked. Everyone else also thought it sucked and I promptly forgot about it.

Yet it has had a resurgence and people act like it's good now. Was it an age thing? Young kids loved it and can now make it popular?

It's great.

People just think it sucks because it's a weird movie.
