It's pretty crazy how it's still relevant. A 2011 single player game with no content updates still has 20,000 concurrent players every day.

QuoteThe Standard PS5 SKU is now up 511% compared with the week before the promotions began. The Standard PS5 accounted for 92% of the total number of PS5 consoles sold last week.

So far this year, PS5 unit sales are 73% up for the first 31 weeks of the year, and represents 47% of all home consoles sold this year (whereas this time last year, PS5 accounted for 31% of the market).

Wow standard selling so much better than digital.

Price down to $450 in America too, just till the 20th. Wonder why so many people want a disc drive.

80/20 was what Sony was intentionally making for quite a while, because they make more on the disc drive.
Not sure if that's still the case.

A lot of people still buy physical games.

I don't mind, I don't buy digital games, but I guess it's just unexpected for me since series s is doing strong on the microsoft side.

Yeah, but that's a full $200 cheaper, whereas the digital version of the PS5 is only $50 cheaper. Series S was even $250 cheaper than the Series X for the holiday.

MS can also make like 2x as many Series S's as X's, due to the much smaller chipset.

movies.

I buy games 100% digital and have done so since mid PS3 gen.  I do not have 1 game that can play on PS5 via a disc.

...but I have ~500 dvd/Blu-ray and a public library.   it was worth it just to be able to watch a movie.

$200 cheaper for a worse product. I guess Sony and Microsoft are diverging and going after different markets, at least at the moment. If you're going to spend the extra cash to get a PS5 over a series s, you might as well get the fully featured PS5 even if you don't plan to use discs.

I like physical movies but we are a rare bread

This graph ends in 2018 and it doesn't get better. Combined sales of all disc movies are now down to $1.3 billion a year.

Would be cool if there was a stat but I really doubt a large percentage of PS5s have ever had a disc movie put in them.

edt: lol I'm keeping the typo

I'm pretty sure physical console games are a bigger deal than physical movies.

Oh yeah. Just 10% of gamers still buying discs would be huge compared to physical movies.

kitler53

I don't buy movies anymore either guys. it's not about buying new movies. it's:
1. play the disc I already own
2. rent a new release from the library.

unlike games movie rental makes sense.   I get 2 weeks with the disc.   that's not long enough for a game but it's plenty to rent a new release movie and watch it.   I rent a disc most weeks and it means I can just sub to Netflix and ignore the other streaming services.

Nah nobody does that. Why watch it on DVD when Netflix can stream that very same movie in high resolution?

Spoiler for Hidden:
Also I probably buy more physical movies than most people... <br>

kitler53

Netflix doesn't get many of the movie theater releases,.. especially at the time it hits disc.   I'm not subbing to all 12 services I'd need to sub to in order to get access to everything my library gets access to.

Too be honest, after reading Nintendo's ... whatever their online buying thingy is, fudge digital.  shame disappearing off of online streaming sites, content owners (movie publishers) just pulling stuff off of their streaming platform for, no reason, I guarantee Sony would have killed PS3 downloads eventually if there wasn't a justified pushback (Just like Nintendo does).  I bought The Last of Us TV show on 4k bluray, no 4k bluray player, but fudge streaming.
