Question for the game modelers/ designers. When modeling an open world do games usually take into consideration the curvature of the earth?

No way lol.

You only do curvature if it's a big selling point of the game. It's so much more annoying to work with and engines are optimized for flat worlds.

Plus the world is really really big so unless you're a flight sim, you'd have to exaggerate the curvature to make it visible.

As far as I know, no I don't think they do. But obviously I'm not 100%. But I've never heard of anyone wanting to do that or been told to take anything like that in consideration

Mass Effect's Citadel is one of the best virtual cities BioWare has ever  created | PC Gamer

Mass Effect's Citadel has some curvature. I'd assume it's just in the background and the gameplay area is flat, but this is a case where modeling the curvature might make sense.

Unless the worlds are small like Super Mario Galaxy, they're going to be flat.

Some space games have spherical worlds though, for obvious reasons.

It's a different type of curvature but I might as well use this opportunity to plug hyperbolica.

I remember hearing driveclub did that. But drive club isn't open world, and it was obvious they were talking about the backgrounds, not the road itself

I would assume it would make some aspects of game design a living hell.

Just episode 1. Each episode releases every 2 weeks
