- revenue from Bungie  ;D
- expertise on GaaS.   :-[
- expertise on FPS, I guess.   :P
- perhaps a bargaining chip to keep CoD on PlayStation
They get a profitable company that will help with their bottom line and recoup the investment they made in them.

I do wonder if bungie will "chose" to release on Xbox.

Bungie buying their freedom from Microsoft only to eventually be bought by Sony is very amusing.

Outside of that, I'm not a fan. F2P and GaaS ruin almost everything they touch and this purchase is horrible if it pulls Sony in that direction, as all the tweets mention. I'd be so pumped if Sony funded a premium AAA shooter like Halo or Killzone from them  :'(

Eh this hopefully just gives them a studio to have that under their umbrella instead of having to pull a current studio into creating a fps free to play from scratch.

I'll worry if it starts affecting their games.

So far Sony seems happy with God of War, Horizon, etc.

But they have a handful of multiplayer games in the works.
Spoiler for Rumors from job listings mostly:

well this was not the news i expected to read today.

i'm glad MS didn't get them.  the very open committment to multi-platform is strange to me.   i fully get keeping destiny 2 multiplat,.. you don't pull a game down.  ...but at least be non-committal about bungies next game.   leverage both against MS and wrt to gamers that are now viewing xbox as the system that will get all the games..

bungie, imo, makes better playing games than CoD.   much much cheaper too,.. MS payed 19.4x more for activision,.. 19 bungies would be worth a lot more than 1 activision...

destiny plays fantastic even if the business model isn't doing it any favors.   i think this buys sony some fantastic experience for how to write online multiplayer and shooter games,.. a thing they never really seem to perfect.  so horray for that i guess.

As always I'm not happy about consolidation.

But I'm glad that Sony isn't backing down from the fight.   :P

The gaming industry is at its best when there's good competition.

Yeah this still isn't that great of news.  It's just solidifying that most big independent studios or big publishers are likely to be bought up

Sony have to protect PlayStation, it's their best division. Letting MS buy all the gaming studios means Somy have to do what they want or die out. Basically, you can have our games on PlayStation through the Xbox Games Pass. At least if it's on a more even playing field, we might see Games Pass on PlayStation and the rumoured to be improved PlayStation Plus/Now on Xbox. We all win

Games like horizon, gow, tlou and spiderman wont go anywhere. Sony has spent so much building these studios to make these type of games and they proved very successful to them. Even publishers like EA and ubisoft back tracked on making all their games GaaS and returned to making single player games, because they make a lot of money.

But Sony clearly wants to make successful GaaS games. And that will he huge for playstation. ND and GG made awesome multiplayer games before and I wouldnt be upset to play more multiplayer games from them. They won't stop making single players games either. Im all for Sony going full in on the multiplayer games, because honestly this gen for me has been rather disappointing on that front.

bungie can be the center-peice of their GaaS publishing.

if you are going to try and replicate the success of fortnight,.. you don't go exclusive.  you're on every platform you can day-1 cast your net to build your community as large as possible.  halo infinite (mp) not being on playstation was honestly the wrong call.  if ND really is making a GaaS mp game,.. being exclusive to playstation basically is a deathblow.  being playstation and PC might work out but really it probably should be on xbox as well.

and why wouldn't sony want to try and replicate the success of fortnight,..  holy crud it makes a lot of money.

I feel like this was a better acquisition than Activision bargain wise.
