Some of this just feels like they are responding to MS.
- pushing more cross gen games
- pushing PS+ collection.

Absolutely. At least for Spider-Man the rumour popped up some time ago that it would come to PS4. But I seriously believed they would make that a late release if they were gonna do it, to a) have an exclusive Spider-Man game at launch and b) keep up the appearance of it being an experience only possible on next gen. Then half a year later, once that conversation was over they could then still go back and release the PS4 version.

But whose freaking idea was it to make people first believe for 3 months that these games will be next gen only, to then just turn around and go "psyche, they are actually cross gen" before they are actually out? What is the purpose of that?

I've disliked pretty much everything about how they are handling communication/marketing with next gen. I think PS5 is amazing but outside of the previous showcase, it's mostly selling off pre-existing hype.

Honestly more and more it is starting to feel like Sony is over- reacting to criticism.

MS pushed Smart Delivery, and Sony quietly brings free upgrades.
MS pushed cross gen titles, Sony doesn't, until they do.
MS pushes Game Pass, Sony decides to push PlayStation collection.
MS pushes quiet system ;) , Sony decides to make PS5 extra quiet.

Maybe this bodes well with BC coming at some point.

They made it sound like later 2021 but def. At the very least it's before gow.
Lol yeah Resogun. I saw that it was on PS3 a week or so ago and I was shocked.

Yep. June showcase was a huge win but everything else has been bizarre. Worldwide studios output being literal god tier is carrying them hard.

Well I sure know, why I kept away from resetera yesterday. What is this crud? How do you deliberately misinterpret the standard "we're still committed to our last gen system" lip service as "all our games will be cross gen for the next 3/4 years"?

Like I said in Era like 11 times.
I think it's fair to complain they didn't share that Horizon, Spiderman were cross gen.

But that doesn't have anything to do with Jim Ryan's statements about next gen.  He was just saying they were going to have next gen games that show the next gen difference as opposed to promising that all games were going to be cross gen.  Which is what they've done with Ratchet and DS.

And it doesn't have anything to do with Jim Ryan's statements yesterday.  Sony always says they're going to support their system for 10 years. They've said it with both PS2 and PS3.  And now people are making up that the next 3 or 4 years is going to have major first party titles galore.  All for the sake of outrage.

Yeah, the move with Miles Morales, Sackboy and Horizon was stupid and pointless on Sony's part, but this is just braindead. A completely forced outrage over literally nothing.

Has Sony ever made large cross gen games before? They have had plenty of last gen exclusives that probably should have been cross gen, but outside of LBP3 and The Show I can't think of any Sony published games that released on multiple generations simultaneously.

There weren't any last gen at least.

you could argue that TLoU was basically a cross-gen release.  yeah, yeah, it released on ps3 first but it was only 1 year between them.   that more of a cross-gen release than a "remaster".

that would be the only "big" title but tons of their smaller titles were cross gen like entwined or hohokum.

i think it makes sense to target cross gen when the game you are creating can be easily supported on both.  i also strongly believe that unlike prior gens the ps4/5 raises the bar of what could be cross gen.  knack could have easily been cross gen if the ps3 wasn't so vastly different in architecture.   as such i think sackboy being on ps4 makes plenty of sense.  miles morales doesn't really surpise me either because it the original spiderman was soo recent and the new one looks like most of the upgrades are in the lighting (Aka ray tracing).

it's only horizon that really irks me,.. maybe if GG wasn't soo vocal about how the ps4's load times impacted their gameplay design choices and how the SSD would open new possiblies i wouldn't be so irked.  horizon ZD released 3 years ago now so many ps4 was always the target and they expected to have already shipped by now releasing in the time slot that GoT got.   ...but now that it's shipping in 2021 i have higher expectations.

i like everyone else that love horizon saw the release trailer and jump to the conclusion that flying mounts will be a thing:

I'm now afraid that won't be happening.

Things change. I certainly prefer this move to a repeat of God of War 2 and Gran Turismo 6. It's still somewhat disappointing but not the end of the world. Hell maybe we should see some actual gameplay for Horizon before we proclaim how much it's being held back by the PS4.

For Miles Morales at least I can't (as of now) see how much of a difference no PS4 version would have made, when keeping all other factors the same.

graphically, i'm sure horizon will look great on ps5.

...but if there is no flying mount the game was held back.  GG said they wanted to do it for horizon but could not because of the issues loading the world fast enough so they had to limit mobility speed.  this was a problem that ps5's SDD would have made possible.  no flying mount = game gimped by ps4.

Or: No flying mount = they tested it and it didn't turn out fun or like something that would add much to the experience.
