This game is a prequel. I doubt they expect the average player to have played the first one.

No its set a couple decades before. Only connection is you're playing as the gang that John Marston used to be in. If anything it might be better to play 2 then 1.

i had popped it in,  went out for a half hour,  came back and started vaping assuming it would be close.   then notice its not even half :/ lol

Initially when we inserted the disc, the estimated time read as three hours total. Thankfully that sped up over time. When installing the 89.195 GB required to play Red Dead Redemption 2, disc one contained 41.631 GB of the data and took us approximately 46 minutes to install in its entirety. After putting in the second disc, the rest downloaded in what ended up being 42 minutes. So in total, it took us 1 hour and 28 minutes to install Red Dead Redemption 2 in its entirety.

No you can't open the game until all 90GB is installed. Installing is that slow for other games as well its just this one doesn't have a start playing parrt way through feature.

I know installing is that slow in general, I'm a PS4 dev  

I'm surprised Rockstar didn't package the game differently though. Playgo is great for getting players into games fast and is heavily pushed by Sony.

Oh really?  You should give my friend some advice.  He's been working on a game for the past 5 years, I think.

Maybe VizionEck was finished 3 years ago and he's just waiting for it to finish installing on his dev kit? These things take time.
