So about the same with PSN numbers (Maybe more on PS4).  My question is, why did the 3DS get a bigger hardware boost?  Did people lose their 3DSs or something?

A lot of people are buying the new 2DS that released a few weeks ago.  
It's also cheaper.  

But why?  Do people in Japan need 3 3DSs or something?  There's what, 30 million 3DS users in Japan? I'm certain the 1 million people who bought Dragon Quest are one of those 30 million users.
Edit, I just saw the 23 million lifetime to date up above.  My point still stands.

There was a price cut last October.  Basically a 50$ cut.
