The success of Pokémon Go came too late to prevent a 39 billion yen (£280m) loss for Nintendo after sales of its Wii U console slumped.

The Japanese video game group has enjoyed a rapid rise in its share price following the release of Pokémon Go, the wildly-popular smartphone game that has reinvigorated the Pokémon franchise, but reported its worst loss in years on Wednesday.

Sales of Nintendo's home console, the Wii U, have been extremely disappointing while those of its 3DS handheld are also in decline.

During the three months to the end of June - the first quarter of its 2017 financial year - Nintendo sold just 220,000 Wii Us. Since its release almost four years ago it has sold just 13m units, compared with more than 100m for its predecessor, the Nintendo Wii.

Revenues fell by 31pc to 62bn yen, meaning an operating loss of 5.1bn yen (£37m). The company lost 35bn yen due to the foreign exchange impact of the rising Japanese currency, meaning a pre-tax loss of 38.7bn yen.

Nintendo's shares have more than doubled since Pokémon Go was released earlier this month as the augmented-reality game has become a smash hit, rising to the top of global app chart and forecast to be earning millions a day.

This is despite the effect of the game's success on Nintendo's bottom line being unclear. It owns just a third of the Pokémon Company, which licenses the franchise, and 13 per cent of Niantic, the game's developer.

The company is pinning its future on the Nintendo NX, the codename for a mysterious new console it is due to release in March next year, as well as its own smartphone games, which it hopes will emulate the Pokémon Go phenomenon.

Nintendo plans to release two apps by the end of the year based on its popular Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem series.

That's a pretty huge loss in a quarter...

Legend

So much for making a profit even with low Wii U sales.

Did amiibo drop too or something?

I woukd imagine so.  Most Nintendo fans would stop after collecting from the Trinity and maybe a few extras.

The Wii U once again hilariously overtracked on the chertz? I'm shocked, lol.

The sites atrocious code doesn't let me view the number at the end of June at the moment, but the chertz have the Wii U selling over 350k in the quarter, while already being clearly overtracked at the end of last quarter (less than 20k Wii Us in stock).

Cute Pikachu

Well if you actually had games for it you could have had less of a loss.
Nintendo being stupid again  :(
