What's going on with Project Neo?

A while back Osirisblack of Neogaf talked about a meeting with Sony hinting towards the rumored specs that we have now. Same Cpu Double the Gpu with a price point of 399. He's recently made another post saying that the price has been pushed up to 499 and they've had two spec sets from the beginning the second set being ''considerably more''powerful than the 4.4 TF neo. Possibly at the 6TF of the scorpio or higher.

So it's possible that Sony got wind of the 6tf Scorpio and reevaluated what they should be done with the neo, and pulled it from the conference just days before. This compounded with the pulled Rockstar game ( orlando shooting ) Lead to a shorter than normal Sony Show.

Osiris also Says that the higher spec neo would cost more than Sony is comfortable with. Would sony take a loss on the neo for a year or So till manufacturing cost can catch up to consumer expectations of a consoles price? What are Sony's options here and what would you do? Discuss.

Beats me. I'm just going to wait and see what happens

As long as mass manufacturing hasn't gone into full swing, Sony has time to evaluate their options and decide the best course of action. I would not be surprised if Sony goes dark on Neo for the rest of the year and we don't start hearing about it again until around next E3. Regardless of the options they originally planned out. A later release than the rumors suggested would allow the production costs to drop a little which would give them some wiggle room on the price. However, if this is going to be a device for the more hardcore audience initially, they should probably just treat it like one and not be horribly concerned about pricing. Just sell it for as cheap as you can while not taking losses. Even if you take some initial losses you already have a very strong install base and PS+ subs to offset.

Nobody knows what it means, but it's provocative.

Also you read his second post wrong. He said the lower price.

How he bolded the 499 price and said that ''right now this appears to be the lower of the two options price point''

I think they should still shoot for this year no matter what they do. Having a year head start will be killer.

Oh I didn't see the bolded.

Back to my original gif response then!

So Sony was aiming for a $400 price tag by only upgrading to a GPU a little more than twice as powerful as the current PS4 while keeping the CPU and RAM pretty much the same. So if the price is actually $500 right now, I wonder if they actually went with the CPU upgrade. Because as I understand it, the leaked specs showed only a very marginal bump in CPU clock speed. Not nearly enough to justify another $100.

It was talked about that when Neo leaked.

Plan A: Same CPU with high clock plus 4.2TF GPU.

Plan B: A more expensive CPU with ~5TFs GPU.

In any case it won't be stronger than Scorpio releasing in 1.5 years.

Neo will release this year.

I think thats what yhey did.

they should do the 5tp version at $499 that launches this year.

6 tp is going to be wasted on ms anyways. they don't have the developers to utilize this and if sony waits another year it isn't a mid gen refresh it is an early start into the next gen.

maintaining both forward and backward compatibility is crucial here otherwise ms gets to to hit the reset button and sony risks losing their established lead.

Well if DF (?) was right then they have a down clocked 480 then all they would really have to do is run it at stock clock to give it the full 5.5 TF. The difference between the two would be so small nobody would notice. Of course they'll also have to figure out how to cool it but I'm sure they can handle that.

What if they run it past full and outdo MS?

Just have a XBO sized box for cooling.

Maybe, then you're shorting the consoles life expectancy and dealing with even more heat and power.
