The difference between the two would be so small nobody would notice. Of course they'll also have to figure out how to cool it but I'm sure they can handle that.
4.5 to 5.5 doesn't even matter.  in 3 more years the next iteration comes and it will be 10 tf.  the relevancy of that number is so short lived it really doesn't matter.

they need to be profitable.
they need to be on schedule.
they need to be committed to forward and backward compatibility.

that how that make playstation an ecosystem and not a machine.  machine are disposable but ecosystems last.  sony has the content to not have to worry about missing a terraflop for less than two years but waiting another year will break the promise of iterative hardware before they start.

If the only reason to upgrade to new iterations is power, then power matters.

The people who don't care about a 30% teraflop difference are most likely to just stick with current systems.

the hardest core will always upgrade.

the question is will the new buyers get the high or low end model?   sony wants a big percentage to go high which needs to consider affordability.

in 3 more years the ps4 is taken off the forward compatibility and ps4k is the new floor. this won't go well if it launches at $600 or after 4 years instead of 3   you want the "generation" to last 6 mot 8 years.
