Because in Bayonetta 2's case it's not probably overtracked. We know it's overtracked. Of course many games are under and overtracked on VGC but usually they get adjusted according to the information we have. So games which we have no official or leaked numbers can't be randomly changed. But we know Bayonetta 2 is 182k as of November 28th 2015 in the US according to NPD. VGC has it at nearly 500k at the same point in time. That's 300k overtracked in a single territory or 275% lol

But that's not original source NPD data - that's NeoGaf claiming to have NPD data. It could be real, or could be made up and not what NPD really has on file. And as good as NPD can be, they can and will at times be wrong.

Fact: Bayo 2 hit #9 for Amazon monthly October 2014, behind only Smash 3DS, CoD, and PSN giftcards. (Ahead of Shadow of Mordor! Halo!) Only selling 180k seems a bit far-fetched - even if Amazon isn't 100% representative of all game-buying, correct?

This is fundamentally ridiculous. NPD is never "wrong." 95% of their numbers are sourced directly from point-of-sale feeds from all of the major brick-and-mortar and online retailers. You can't be "wrong" when your data is comprised of actual sales receipts from the market.

Amazon is the go-to place for niche sales. Titles that proliferate on Amazon often flounder at more established retail venues like Walmart and Best Buy.

It is not a reliable indicator of NPD software sales rankings for that reason. Not to mention, there are many reasons why a random legacy title could have jumped up in the rankings. It's certainly not indicative of any trend or NPD inaccuracy.

I don't think he's necessarily questioning NPD as much as he's questioning the legitimacy of the leaks, still stupid since these people questioning NPD leaks only ever pop up when the leaks show something lower than they want it to be. The Nintendo fanboys on vgchartz (and elsewhere) have wanted Bayonetta 2 to be a success for ages, as a way to prove that third party games for a mature audience can sell on the Wii U, the game selling a 500k in the US works way better as an argument for that than the game selling less than 200k over there.

Ratchet is doing so much better than I expected. YAY!

Kerotan

With this performance for Ratchet Sony will almost surely greenlight a bigger budget for Ratchet and clank 2. And considering it's a re-imagining like the first it's almost guaranteed to be excellent.

My next step with the series will be replaying the ps3 games.

Yeah, as of February 2016 NPD. Xenoblade Chronicles X sold something like 25K in the January report after 200K in December (can't recall the exact number off the top of my head, but it's something like that). So you can see the title is slowing down in the retail market. Its legs are weak at best...it didn't magically rebound in March, either.

Despite Nintendo's grand ambitions for the title...it's just not a blockbuster. You can thank Wii U's malaise for that, as well as an accelerating YOY migration to digital.

Nah, he's questioning NPD's accuracy. He replied with this nonsense:

QuoteYou totally misunderstand NPD's methodology. They don't aggregate every single transaction from POS data. They build statistical models to provide estimates. They sample, and extrapolate - but there are characteristics of Bayo 2 to which NPD can very easily over-normalize inputs in providing an accurate estimate (e.g. being a mature WiiU title, the low install base, poor Japan sales, the publisher's previous release: TW101).

Add the noise of the NPD data being handed down not by NPD itself, but by a forum with only a little more credibility than VGC and you can see why I remain skeptical.

The top 10 - 20 retail titles for Amazon monthly do tend to fall in a pretty similar order as NPD and largely made up of mainstream titles. While niche titles do top the the hourly, the monthly/yearly figures do end up closely resembling  NPD.

The truth is that Bayo 2 was and still is yet a a leading piece of the gaming mindshare. It's now a highly valued IP to the dedicated army of Nintendo fans that show up for 1st party releases. To say it's sold less than 200k is far out of step with the game's prominence and vibrant community. 700k+ WW is way more believable.

It boggles my mind that some people are extremely averse to facts and empirical data. His comment on how the software rankings in Amazon's monthly charts are similar to NPD's is complete buffoonery. February and March 2015 are great counterexamples to his ridiculous claim.

Kerotan

That was face palm worthy on charts.  It's like "we know Bayonetta sold way less than a million but it doesn't matter because we're having our party anyway".

The myth that Bayonetta 2 sold well on Wii U is exactly that.  A myth.  Considering the quality of the game,  the rave reviews,  the constant praise on forums,  the lack of competition from other games on the Wii U.... It sold like absolute shame.

Which is sad.

If Mario isn't in it, it's not going to sell.  It's the sad fact.

ChertZ adjusted PS4 down a bit but 3DS and WiiU are still way overtracked lol. #Classic

Thank you aqua!

Woah dude, how do know the Wii U is definitely overtracked?  I mean, it doesn't sell well so of course 100k in NA (this include Mexico and Canada) is reasonable even though that's indicative of extreme supply issues and Wii U is readily available at every store... But let's not mention that

Legit though, ps4 was overtracked. Hopefully ioi didn't over adjust like he's prone to do because it really wasn't by much
