Kimishima: NX "not merely" successor to "handheld" 3DS or "stationary console" Wii U - NeoGAF

QuoteSorry to post yet another Nintendo thread, but I don't think this quote from Kimishima is getting enough discussion/speculation (despite being posted in other threads).
QuoteRespected Japanese paper Nikkei asked Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima what kind of game machine the NX was. "At this current stage, I'm not able to say," Kimishima replied. "However, it's not merely the successor to the handheld 3DS or stationary console Wii U. This will be hardware that's been made with a new way of thinking. I'd like to announce more particulars regarding its specs and how it works another time this year."

What should we/can we read into this?   If it's not "merely" a "handheld" OR "stationary console," what the hell is it? I know Iwata said repeatedly that it wouldn't be a hybrid, but things have changed with his passing and that quote sounds hybrid-esque. Not being "merely" a handheld or a console could imply that it's both at once. Or it could imply that there will just be a lot of hardware options out there to play all NX games I guess. Sucks we have to wait so long to even no what the NX hardware is in general.

I think when the NX gimmick is revealed, it'll suck.

However over time we'll come to accept that it's not that bad.

wii mote still sux and is terrible for gaming in almost all genres.
3ds's 3D still sux and is best turned off.
wiiU's gamepad is useless for gaming.
nx will be dumb because nintendo doesn't innovate,.. they do weird stuff for the sake of being different not for the sake of making things better.

Wii remote wasn't great, it wasn't terrible either though but it did manage to be used even worse.  Vast majority of games barely used motion controls, it just ended up being used as an NES controller.

NSMB - basically an NES controller
Smash - basically an NES controller
Mario Kart - either used as a wheel or a nunchuck combo where you do basically no motion except for tricks.  (Which is my favorite way to play)
etc...

Basically for 95% of games, they don't use it.  You're just stuck with a fairly awkward shaped controller with very few buttons.

It's similar with the Wii U gamepad.  There's some pretty cool uses of the gamepad, but it mostly goes underutilized.

Mario Maker is super cool with the gamepad.

Wiimote is the spawn of satan. Some games did cool things with it, but waggle is imo the stupidest game concept ever devised. I can't be bothered to finish Super Mario Galaxy because the controls are so horrible.

3DS 3D is great and should always be set to max, even though the 3D itself is poor quality. However it's not worth the cost nor the extra processing power.

Wii U gamepad is the frankenstein of controllers. Outside of touchscreen functionality and incredibly unique games, it's not useful. If it only cost a few dollars to include this gimmick, I think it'd be OK.

The hardest part about Nintendo's recent gimmicks is that they don't work well with multiplat games. I think Nintendo's realised that. As long as the NX gimmick is cheap or universal, I think it won't be as bad as the gamepad.

The waggle spin thing and the pointer controls to collect star bits were just too much for the game to be enjoyable.

Meanwhile I loved Super Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario 3D World.

I've heard Super Mario Galaxy 2 has better controls so I want to try it one of these days.

I had a Wii.. Worst console I've ever owned. I bough two games for it. Zelda and Mario kart. Hated both and gave it away. I think I played a shooter too... The best controls for fps fans said. Absolutely garbage.

don't.  galaxy was a great game despite the waggle.  galaxy 2 was just a bad game.

but that's my whole point,..

i don't think nintendo has realized that at all.  i think they still want to "surprise" people thinking that is what made the wii successful.  they are forgetting that the disappointment in the wii is a huge part of why the wiiU was so unsuccessful.

The Wii was one of those things where practically everyone I knew had one but no one used it.

i had the opinion that most of my friends (gamers or non-gamers) had,.. it was really fun for a bit but the games were shallow, lack depth, and became boring to play too quickly.  nintendo wants to be accessible but has forgotten they also need to be satisfying.  most nintendo games are trash these days and their sales reflect that.
