So if I'm reading this correctly then he's suggesting that Sony lied to retailers to check market reaction to see if they should go through with the prototype they have?

What exactly does this mean?

Think he sounds a bit cynical about it.

QuoteDidn't see a thread for this, please lock if oldhttp://www.giantbomb.com/articles/so...-ne/1100-5437/
QuoteEarlier this year, rumors began to fly that Sony would release an upgraded version of the PlayStation 4, a console often called the PS4.5 or the PS4K by fans and press. Today, multiple sources have confirmed for us details of the project, which is internally referred to as the NEO. No price was provided, but previous reports indicate that the NEO would sell at $399. At time of publishing, Sony has not returned our request for comment, but we will update this story if the company responds.

QuoteStarting in October, every PS4 game is required to ship with both a "Base Mode" which will run on the currently available PS4 and a "NEO Mode" for use on the new console.

QuoteGames running in NEO mode will be able to use the hardware upgrades (and an additional 512 MiB in the memory budget) to offer increased and more stable frame rate and higher visual fidelity, at least when those games run at 1080p on HDTVs. The NEO will also support 4K image output, but games themselves are not required to be 4K native.

QuoteThe NEO will not supplant the current PS4, but will exist alongside of it and use the same user environment. The PS4 and NEO will use the same PSN store, connect to the same online communities, and offer the same user experience, so expect to see the same cross media bar that you're used to. Players will be able to retain all of the purchases they made on the PS4.

QuoteSony seems committed to keeping the NEO and the original PS4 player bases connected. As such, there will be no NEO-only games, and Sony will not let developers separate NEO users from original PS4 players while playing on PSN. Likewise, Sony explicitly and repeatedly states that developers cannot offer exclusive gameplay options or special unlockables for NEO players—so don't expect NEO owners to get a level editor or a special Rocket League car that you won't have access to on your original PS4.

Specs:
QuoteOriginal PS4 CPU:    8 Jaguar Cores at 1.6 GHz    GPU: AMD GCN, 18 CUs at 800 MHz Memory: 8 GB GDDR5, 176 GB/s    NEO CPU: 8 Jaguar Cores at 2.1 GHz GPU: Improved AMD GCN, 36 CUs at 911 MHz Memory: 8 GB GDDR5, 218 GB/s

I've tried to parse out the important information but please read the article, there's a ton of stuff there.

Sony seems to like to use Matrix codenames.

PSVR -> Morpheus
PS4K -> Neo

The more I think about this, the more onboard with it I am. It looks like Sony is aiming for a minor boost in CPU speed instead of what previous rumors made it sound like. That they were aiming for a big CPU bump. The GPU looks like a substantial improvement but one aimed at keeping the price down. Access to additional memory, and faster at that, is nice. I believe that's the first time we heard about a memory bump or at least any kind of numbers. As long as they keep the price at $400, market this correctly, and make sure everyone understands there is nothing exclusive about this platform except higher performance.... it may actually work and more than just an enthusiast piece.

Like I said before in sales thread this APU will mostly be made in 14/16nm that permits to use the same CPU with high-clocks and double the number of CUs with high-clocks.

Win win.

It can be small than PS4's APU... that means cheaper.

People guessed Sony could use 14nm Polaris but it could give them a lot of compatibility issues.

Sony did the right... shrink the PS4's APU in 14/16nm to increase clocks and fit the space gained with addiction CUs.

Pretty easy move.

Yup I like the rumors so much for compatability. It's just higher clocks and double the cores. Standard PS4 games should run with absolutely no problem.

I like thinking of PS4k as a competitor to NX. It's Sony's way to stop Nintendo from getting the upper hand in graphics.

So how much does this rumour line up with the Blackosiris one? In terms of specs?

I've come to think that most people on Gaf aren't the smartest tools in the shed anyway. You can be wary of course, but like I said before people that can 100% see nothing but negatives coming from this are total idiots.

Edit: God watching the internet talk about this has become insufferable.

Don't you know? 16-bit indies, garbage Japanese titles, and 5-hour interactive movies should be the only thing the industry needs.

Also the only solution to this PS4k situation is obviously to stop buying all Sony first party games and to buy a NX, cause we sure as hell know that Nintendo is above mid-generation hardware upgrades....
