Quote from: Legend on Mar 21, 2016, 06:35 PMThat's actually an interesting question.

If this new PS4k had an additional outputs for VR added, then they could get rid of the box.
Care to make a thread where we can bet what the PS4K will ultimately be? :P

Curious if you knew beforehand or just sussed it out. I took note of this quote when you said it back then.

Once CES hit, and the push of 4k TVs was so intense, and having Sony being a primary mfg of 4k TVs, and looking at Morpheus, and seeing that it needed an add on box, the most logical next step would be a PS4 device that supported 4k and VR in a more convenient way that could also be used to buoy average selling prices. When people get over the initial surprise and see what it most likely is (marginal upgrade for the super enthusiast, 4k, VR early adopter crowd) then people will see it as a "well of course they'd do that" thing.  I have no firsthand knowledge of the thing.

Would be fun to doublecheck opinions about this move with comments people gave for Xbox1.5.

Already saw a few posters in that thread saying this is not a big deal that were arguing with me calling me an idiot about the same darn thing back in January.  Good times.

QuoteShu interview with engadget that includes 4k commentary 4k part starts at 10:16 through 12:15 - 4k adoption catching up in NA and EUR, but not as fast as in Asia - 1080p/60 still a golden standard on PS4 - If developers have to make games in 4k it could have negative impact on framerate - PS4 is not designed to support 4k gaming - PS4 has 4k output support, but not 4k gaming suport - Higher framerate is the priority

Since when did ps4 have 4K output support? If so, why doesn't Netflix have a 4K app yet?

I don't know.  That's what Shu said in the interview.

PS4 will support 4K for 'personal contents' like photos, but not games | Polygon
QuoteThe PlayStation 4 will support media output resolution at 4K for photos and videos but not for games, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed to Polygon this morning.

"The official answer is that the PS4 supports 4K output but for personal contents, like photos or videos. Not games," Yoshida said. "PS4 games do not work on 4K."

Nice catch. I didn't hear about this interview, at all, so I'm not aware that this was back in 2013.

Quote from: Aura7541 on Mar 21, 2016, 06:21 PMReading this comment of yours again, if true, do you think Sony will release another PSVR SKU that does not include the box?

All of Sony's presentations mention that the box is a splitter to convert the image from TV to VR Headset. It doesn't actually do anything else for Graphics or Processing apparently.

Maybe they'll include it in there? But I don't see what they'd gain from that?

Pretty sure it is VR to TV, because I am pretty certain they talked about the box doing unwarping for the TV.
Also it does 3D audio.  So a tiny upgrade with 2 hdmi's would be it if that were the case.
Don't think there'd be a lot to gain from that.

as a consumer,... one less ugly box to put in m living room.

that's not something i would upgrade my ps4 for but if i was in the market for psvr that would be a real nice to have feature built in.

I think this is a very logical explanation as to why Sony is potentially releasing a PS4K.

QuoteWelp, given how quickly PSVR sold out this morning, tough to see how releasing a revised console could have a significant negative impact on PSVR sales this year.  Looks like PSVR might be the hot holiday item regardless.

One iterative console does not mean it is suddenly a business model Sony will follow for ever.

Complete agreement with this.  One iteration certainly does not mean iterative consoles forever. 4K TVs are going to be pushed very hard this holiday.  The idea that Sony is going to be okay with trying to sell a bunch of 4K TVs while its gaming console, that cannot output 4K for games, sits under that TV for the next 2-3 years is ludicrous. Sony has to push 4K TVs, best way to do that is by pushing content, both gaming and entertainment.  The best way to do that is through PS4.

Yeah wouldn't be too different to the 360 getting HDMI in a revision.

I could imagine this being the case if the PS4k was pretty much the same thing as the PS4 with updated HDMI, and an upscaler.  Basically running the games in the exact same way, but upscaling them to 4K.  I could see that.
In that case, there would be absolutely a benefit for it, if you had a 4K TV, and no one else would feel left out on anything, because they wouldn't have a 4K TV.

But actually running games on a 4K TV, even at 30 fps, is a big stretch.  It's very very hard to run something like Uncharted 4 at 4K.

That seems the most reasonable to me too. But...

...if that was the case developers wouldn't know about it. It'd be just another slim model and it'd release with the only leaks coming from manufacturing.

Sony would only mass inform developers if it affected development in a significant way.

I found this.

"existing ps4 is and will stay the primary console for the coming expected years, all what this new ps4 system will do is run ps4 games in 4k, graphical assets will be the same across both systems. Will there be some enhancements here and there sure, but that's the point of having a 4k set."

Time to add him to the batting thread!

I've been verified. Software will have a  defining application. I couldn't get anything else after that other then they don't know when to launch this product.
