That said, I agree with you on the distortion. There's a reason no one else is picking up on this "news", not even N4G. I feel that Kotaku caught wind of the PS5's specs, but decided to spice the content up by claiming that it's a PS4.5 for the sake of getting more clicks.
Personally I think PS5 news would be much bigger than PS4.5 news.

Hype for next gen is always huge.

But it's too soon and incremental hardware upgrades are one of the hot topics after Spencer opened his mouth.

Assuming this hardware gen lasts 5 years, next gen will start on November 2018. That is still a long way to go and people will merely scoff at Kotaku because any PS5 news is too early. However, by calling it a PS4.5, you can easily catch more people's attention because (1) it's not as large of a leap so it's reasonable time-wise and (2) it's a novel concept.

Pff people have been talking about Nintendo's next gen stuff since 2014. It's never too soon.

How is a PS4.5 a novel concept? Nintendo already did it with the New 3DS, and I've been predicting it for years lol 2014

Console warz make sense.

I agreed with you.

Is that not allowed on the internet?

Nintendo's next gen stuff began early because the Wii U is doing terribly. PS4, on the other hand, is doing really well.

Also, a PS4.5 is a novel concept. When has this happened with home consoles? You also failed to acknowledge the purpose of the N3DS: to delay the handheld's decline in sales and it fulfilled that purpose.

2 big third party devs are getting dev kits/prototype hardware for this next month. It's not PS5.

(As far as I've been told)

Thinking about it more, maybe Sony is adding an HDMI 2.0 port and 4K drive support to the "PS4.5". Overall , it's a feasible hardware revision that increases 4K capability.

Quote from: ZhugeEX on Mar 19, 2016, 08:34 PMHaving known about this for a couple of weeks, I think Kotaku is wrong on the 4k gaming part.

From what I've heard it's slightly better spec PS4 to help with PS VR performance but none of the upgrades are accessible for normal game development.

But then that's just what I've been told. I'd say it's fairly reliable. But I could be totally wrong.
If that's it then that's really disappointing. What's the point in releasing a stronger PS4, if you're limiting its extra power to just VR development? I mean at the end of the day even VR games will have to also work with the normal PS4, right? So if that's the base that all of these VR games have to achieve then why not make the power available to normal game development too?

Didn't GDC's VR presentation have a slide that said "Every PS4 is the same"?
Even a VR-specific upgrade doesn't make sense.

But I find it interesting how split people are on this idea and how many people seem to be straight up against something like this. I mean I definitely get that there are many ways that Sony could be blockheaded and stupid about this, but I think this could also be really cool, if they have a good upgrade program and if they don't do games that are exclusive to the PS4.5.

It all comes down to execution to me.

iPhone 6 and 6s basically both support the same software but my 4s only supports some software.  Games in particular I have a hard time finding compatible games.

I don't mind more frequent but smaller upgrades so long as the minimum standard is at least 5-6 years old and in between everything is forward and backward compatible.  If devs can build to the old model and then get some better fps or resolution on the newer models that could be great.

Graphics joker are likely to buy every model and that is money in sony's pocket.  And then the idea of generations dies.  This is advantageous to Sony as they are winning the current gen. This is nice for consumers as you never find yourself Ina launch year scenario again where you have hardware and no software. It helps developers deal with gen transitions as well because they don't need to consider  the choice of cross gen or next gen exclusive.  SDKs would be familiar. Less worry trying to create a game that needs 5 years of development and is guessing at next gen specs.

I dunno.  The graphics thing isn't so big a jump each gen anymore.  More frequent smaller gen cycles with forward/backward compatibility sounds good to me.  ...but it is all in the execution and marketing.  Hopefully Sony doesn't fudge that up.
