Quote from: darkknightkryta on Feb 19, 2016, 08:08 PMPersona 4 Golden did 350k in Japan, the original probably did less.  Persona 5 won't sell well in Japan because, unfortunately, there's no market there for it.
Persona 4 Golden released on an installbase of  750k in Japan, also it was just an enhanced rerelease of the PS2 game and it still (according to the chertz for whatever that's worth) managed to sell as much as its PS2 original. Persona 4 has also spawned 2 fighting game spinoffs and 1 rhythm game spinoff that sold over 100k in Japan and a dungeoncrawler crossover with P3 that only released on a system that never before had a Persona game release and sold apparently over 250k in Japan. There are 2 Persona 4 animes and I think they recently released the 3rd anime movie for Persona 3 in Japan as well. There are even Persona concerts in Japan, believe me there is a serious market for Persona 5 in Japan.

Now there's one problem that of course still exists that will hinder the games' performance on PS4 and that is its PS3 version, but I simply believe that Persona 5 will be enough of a hit to still sell 500k copies (maybe even noticably more) on PS4 in Japan alone, I've said this before but I fully believe Persona 5 to hit like a truck when it comes out in Japan (not mainline Final Fantasy size but still huge).

Also one last thing I'd point to would be the Famitsu most wanted chart where the game consistently charts at the top or close to the top, I'm not saying this is perfectly representative of the whole market of course, but I simply refuse to believe that this means nothing.
Here's the chart from last week for instance:

1. [PS4] Final Fantasy VII Remake – 631 votes
2. [PS4] Persona 5 – 623 votes
3. [3DS] Dragon Quest XI – 618 votes
4. [PS3] Final Fantasy XV – 588 votes
5. [PS4] Dragon Quest XI – 565 votes
6. [3DS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 – 368 votes
7. [PS4] Kingdom Hearts III – 302 votes
8. [PS4] Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness – 252 votes
9. [PS4] Street Fighter V – 247 votes
10. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 3 – 223 votes
11. [PS4] Tales of Berseria – 220 votes
12. [PS4] Yakuza 4 – 200 votes
13. [WIU] The Legend of Zelda – 197 votes
14. [PS4] Dragon Quest Heroes II – 191 votes
15. [PSV] Kan Colle Kai – 184 votes
16. [PS4] Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 – 182 votes
17. [PS4] Project Setsuna – 179 votes
18. [PS4] Dark Souls III – 178 votes
19. [3DS] Ace Attorney 6 – 170 votes
20. [PS4] The Last Guardian – 152 votes
21. [3DS] Mega Man Legacy Collection – 140 votes

The thing is the way the series has been handled between Persona 4 to now is unique. Atlus has released spinoffs, few of which go into different genres and platforms. In addition, there has been two animations and a movie series, so it's not like the fanbase has been absolutely deprived.

Of course, the big questions are how many new fans Atlus got and will Atlus be able to bring all/most of them to the PS4 when Persona 5 comes out?

Nice graph! So PS4 is finally picking up. We all know why it's so far behind ps1/2 and will never catch up but it's good to see it keeping up with PS3. Especially since none of the big games have hit yet.

Bravo to Sony, it's doing very well

500k is what I expect Persona 5 to sell.  Way less than the 1.5 million Final Fantasy XV will sell and about/less than what MGS 5 will sell.  Like I said, it will sell, but not amazingly.

I actually think most of Persona 5's sales are going to come outside of Japan.

Seeing this makes me sad in a way.  Sony's really working hard with Japanese developers with the PS4 but the people there aren't biting.  On the bright side, the PS4 will probably sell as well as the PS3, which is still solid.

I'd be surprised if the PS4 comes close to the PS3 total.
Home Consoles just aren't selling in Japan no matter what happens. The PS3 was a consistent seller throughout its entire life and whilst it started off slowly, it never really slowed down either.

I'd expect PS4 LTD sales at around 3/4 of the PS3 install base.

There's a lot of pretty big games for that market coming.
I could imagine that they could have a pretty big impact on sales.

Haha well I mean it's doing well considering the current home console market in Japan. Most people expected it to do worse than this.

Btw. has the PS4 overtaken the Wii U in Japan by now, if you align launches?

2.382m PS4 Jan 31 2016 - 3 weeks less than 2 years
2.382m Wii U June 14 2015 - 2 years 6 months 1 week.

Happened about 3 months ago. Basically, PS4 holidays blew past Wii U's sales same time period which was few months before holidays. Which is why PS4 reached the same numbers with 7 months less.

A week before PS4 second anniversary and it has almost 500k more than Wii U's at it's second anniversary.

Really? Because all I ever saw before the PS4 launch was that Japan would do better than PS3 easily. In fact people are still saying PS4 will do better once more games like FF come out.

Its like no one can read the situation there. No matter how many games come out, its  not going to meaningfully increase the PS4 install base.
