Also do they not realize a lot of people visit that forum do to NPD leakers such as aqua? They are gonna take a hit when cosmic, cream, and Harker leave.

I swear hearing the horrific accounts from aqua I may get back into chartz.
I do wish vgchartz would make deals with the 90% of the market. That would solve those numbers for NA but then we just need EU and ROW soruces and we will be set. Doubt it will happen though.

This won't happen unfortunately.

Not many people know this but 'ioi' was originally a NeoGAF forum member back around 2004-2006 and during that time was instrumental at helping out 'Sales-GAF' collect, compile and analyse data. In fact he did an excellent job of compiling all this data and so decided to create a website that posted all this data. Issue being that he was posting numbers that were straight from 'The NPD Group' and we all know these numbers are protected by them. So of course he got into a lot of trouble early on and so was contacted by them, asking him that he remove the data he was posting.

In the end ioi had no choice but to comply and so ended up tweaking a lot of the data and also he decided that 'The NPD Group's' numbers were wrong, so he started adding multipliers to his numbers of say x1.1 or x1.2 because he thought that the NPD Group was tracking too low. He got it into his head that he knew more than market research firms and so launched a weekly and monthly service where he used statistical trend fitting of historical sales performance to work out future game sales and so started to post his own numbers based on a very weak methodology. Of course back at this time he was still getting leaks from The NPD Group on NeoGAF so he was able to correct numbers very quickly. But this didn't stop him from using shipment data, NPD leaks and other sources to literally make up his own version of what he thought the correct sell through number was.

I do believe that as of today he does get some data from a few retailers but nothing that can allow him to get a full picture of the market. He does a good job with the data he does get though as some of his numbers can be fairly close to the actuals, but the majority of data posted on the website is laughably off. There is also no transparency with his numbers as well, every now and then he will randomly change numbers on the website to reflect a new leak or sales/shipment update.

At the end of the day the website has grown to a point where people, including journalists, take their word for it and quote their numbers on a regular basis as if they are fact when sometimes they are far from the truth. Even I used to frequent Chartz back in the day and take their numbers as something from a professional tracking service, but alas it's just one big lie.

Here is an example of ioi manipulating an NPD data leak from August 2006.

Notice how his numbers have been adjusted up from the NPD leak and how on his website he even has data for other games which were not leaked at the time. He just used the rankings and assigned sales numbers.

In memory of NDP_Mulcair, this was my favorite post of his:

NeoGAF - View Single Post -  NPD Sales Results for December 2015 (Up1: Super Mario Maker)

QuoteI genuinely, honestly believe the industry cannot survive another ramp up of production budgets from here. They are at their max as-is. I hope consumers will eternally be okay with that plateau and the limitations that come with it...

...otherwise, the mainstream industry will die.

I really don't want to see the day where this glorious industry withers away because consumers insist upon games with even more hyperrealism that only increasingly-inflated budgets can provide.

Naturally, graphics will incrementally improve over time as tech matures and asset production becomes more efficient. But aside from baseline improvements I genuinely do fear for the future of expectations. I haven't thought this in 30 years of being invested in the video game industry, but I do feel as if it's finally rearing its ugly head to haunt us.

I know I will forever be content with niche Japanese developers who produce on a small budget with tech eternally frozen at the PS3 level. I will always champion the indies where everyone is dedicated to turning back the clock to small, dedicated teams and tiny development budgets like back in the old days.

I just hope enough people think like me to keep this industry alive and thriving.

Here's an archived version if the mod team decides to delete all of his comments.

What's up with all the xbox bundles on Amazon. Amazon doesn't seem to be the seller on any xbox bundle. I wanted to tack sale over the next week between ps4 and xbox and I don't think it's far to include xbox when it's not sold by Amazon.

Not only that, but there are a ton of sellers that are selling the Gears bundle around $300.

Nice debut for Yakuza Kiwami.

So... how long until the XB1 hits single digits?

I guess chertz because on GAF they are saying PS4 will be up next week due DQ release and it is not up YoY yet due the additional week of 2015 skewing things.

Edit - It is GAF lol I read his comment now.

"All hardware fell, didn't quite expect that given the release schedule on PS4 this week, and WiiU is down in the gutter again, lol."

All doommmmmmmm.

ZhugeEX

It's literally the first month of the year. It doesn't need to be up at this point, especially when the majority of sales come in the second half of the year.

I see the same comments during the same months every year.....

But PS4 will be up next week already.

To be fair it is up except for the Week 1 in Japan that last year get some days in December and this year (due the week 53 in 2015) get only days in January.

It will be fine and UP.
