Quote from: ZhugeEX on Dec 21, 2015, 05:26 PMJust keep in mind that the PS2 was originally released in October in the U.S. so the end of that graph (Month 25) is October. For the PS4 the huge spike is attributed to November being month 25.

Please see below for a representation of the PS2 holiday sales -

In order for the PS4 to track ahead of the PS2 over the next year it'd need a minimum of 5 million units sold this December.

That is a huge spike, PS2 truly was a beast.

As I said before, its very unlikely PS4 will ever catch up to PS2 sales again. The only advantage it has is that it is $150 more expensive at this point, launch aligned.

It'll be interesting to see if PS4 can catch up when it gets a big price cut/ slim model.

I'd argue that the biggest thing the PS4 has going against it will be legs.  The PS2 had incredible legs.

You can look around, but even in 2008 there were several months where the PS2 was either beating the XB 360 and PS3, or at the very least it still remained competitive.
That's about a year and a half after the PS3 came out, and 2 and a half years for the 360.

The only way the PS4 could really manage that kind of domination, is if the successors to the consoles are incredibly expensive.  400$ or 500$ PS5/XB2, and a 169$ PS4 could very well dominate for a very long time.

The PS4 does have a pretty big advantage though.    It's still pretty expensive, and obviously has a lot more potential for price cuts making a difference.  Also I'd argue there's also more room for games.

Sony should have an easier time dropping the PS4's price at the tail end of its lifecycle in comparison to the PS3. Even so, it won't have PS2's legs.

I feel like people misunderstood Andrew House's comments
He is talking about outpacing the PS2 WW. Outpacing is the key word here. Ps4 can do that the entire gen without outselling the PS2.
What was PS2 LTD 6 years after release?

There is no doubt about that... PS4 is and will sell better than PS2 WW for some years yet.

What's quite amusing and a testament to the power of Sony's brand in the USA is that the PlayStation 2 was actually a huge competitor to the Xbox 360 early on. For example, if you align Xbox 360 first 24 month sales and compare it to aligned sales with the PS2 (bearing in mind the PS2 is 5 years old at this point) then the PS2 still comes out on top.

Same happened worldwide as well. The PlayStation 3 was hindered by the high cost and poor reputation early on yet it still managed to outsell the Xbox 360 worldwide (when aligned) early on and even the PS2 was tracking ahead of the 360 early on (when comparing the same time). It wasn't until the release of Kinect that the 360 really started taking off and actually started selling more than the PS2.

Well PS2 hadn't entered the holidays at that point, right?

Wow, that graph is crazy. PS2 truly was a monster and I can't see PS4 doing that to PS5/Xbox Next. I think it will manage to become the 2nd best home console of all time but it won't come close to PS2, everything just went right for that console and it won't happen again.

I don't think a successor will come out at least until 2019
6 years..my estimates on that year put PS4 at around 100M. Afaik that's where the PS2 was at in the same timeframe and when the PS3 launched. Ps2 ofc had the advantage that it was sold so cheaply in the following years. That could theoretically happen with the PS4, but given Sony's recent trends they'll probably not try to drive PS4 sales further after that point with price cuts, as they'll want to have big sales on the successor. The age of console legs is over, i reckon. Market changed.
Of course, not knowing what comes after the PS4 does muddle things a bit..

Quote from: Raven on Dec 21, 2015, 05:32 PMIt's important to note that PS2 had no real competition anywhere. Even the US. That makes it more difficult for PS4, which is actually competing against another console in the US this time. Console sale engagement outside of the US and Japan seems larger than it has been in the past. That may help push WW sales ahead of PS2 since PS4 is largely THE console in most other countries. Also expecting a significant increase in Japanese sales this year thanks to a flood of incoming JRPGs.
I think price is more of a factor.  A 199 gaming device vs a 350.

Cute Pikachu

So Nintendo decided to be fudge yards and limit the amount of copies they shipped in FR and US of XCX.
