My kid and me are locked in the back room with covid.   to keep him entertained while i work i'm letting him play my retro Pi.   and be "letting" i mean "forcing" because i'm sick and tired of playing the lego games and I want him to expand his horizons into different games.

jesus fudgy christ he's trying to get me to answer a question every 10 seconds
- how did you throw that guy
- how do i swich my character
- where am i supposed to be going
- how to i open this chest
- will i ever get a sword
- how to i hit this box
- will i ever get a sword
- how do i get magic
- where am i supposed to be going
- i'm bored can we play something else

...back in my day no one told us how to play a game.  we just figured it out dang nabbit...

Maybe many old games are just not that good anymore  :P

You can't really blame him when the structure of games is so different now than what it was decades ago. Jumping into something completely different will cause him.issues.

oh they are still good.   ..and bad.   ...but the good ones are very good.

after playing TMNT turtles in time with him this afternoon i'm realizing how much that game does with such limited input.  so many slight variants in button press or hold, button press timing, enemy distance, enemy animation gives me access to a stupid number of moves with only jump and attack buttons.

the hit detection on zelda is a bit poor though.  very much limited by the directional d-pad however.

oh, i sure can blame him.   he needs more stick-to-it-ness.   he's a quitter that boy is.  too many lego games with no penalty for dying.

I always felt that the penalty for death in video games was the failure to progress in the game.

No idea about the traits of your kid though, if he needs more stick-to-it-ness or not. But I assume some video games can help build the trait.

As an adult though, if a video game frustrates me I am usually like fudge THIS, or I check online how to continue

we quit mario 3 after he couldn't beat the first level...

...he must of died at least a dozen times before he jumped over the 1st mushroom.

he just got really mad again.

he died and lost a bunch of progress.  i than had to explain how in old games there is no autosave.   that conversation went about as well as you could imagine.

This is an overall educational issue.  We've been collectively lowering the bar and removing any process that encourages critical thinking.
