As a follow up to that conversation i had (possibly with myself) about how sony's strategy (and the rest of the industry really but i'll focus on things coming to ps hardware) is to no longer have big shows but instead have a more numerous and consistent schedule of announcements to promote "engagement". here i'm going to compile this year's biggest and E3 worthy announcements of 2022 that could have made up an E3 showcase but won't because big showcase shows like E3 are dead.

I agree to an extent.

The days of 5 or more (E3, TGS, PGW, Gamescom, PSX, etc) big 90 or even 120+ minute shows are gone.

But there are still "bigger" shows. They're just 40 minutes long instead in favor of more frequent updates.  :P

And gaming companies don't really need the E3 organisation to help promote their games. Their channels on YouTube and twitch and such reach their audience. So they do the shows on their own time table

I still think Sony/Ms will have a big show every year. Because those still attract a lot of talk, interest and hype.

i mean, "bigger" is a relative term.   an mole hill is bigger than an ant hill...

i think (but can't remember who) was talking to me about sony needing to have a big show soon due to having almost nothing on the horizon announced and soo many teams.  it was right around that time there was that rumor of sony having a big show to introduce their new PS+++ offerings.

i just don't think the format makes sense anymore.    when you spent 3 days as an industry announcing 50+ things only like 3-4 go viral enough to get any attention.

that doesn't mean there can't be a show where multiple things are announced,.. so far this year sony has had 2 of those types of announcements.   that one day ps blog announced 7 indie titles and that one state of play that announced trek to yomi, diofield chronicles, valkyrie asylum, exoprimal, and had a new trailer for forespoken.

my 2 cents is the bigger the game the fewer the announcements.  featured indies will be announced 5-10 at a time.   AA will be announced 2-5 at a time.   ...these games lack "weight" on their own so having a few announced at a time increases media coverage.    but AAA games will get announced by themselves like how SF6 did.

those are sort of contrary statements though.    ms and sony's big shows had previously been made up a lot from 3rd party content.    if those gaming companies can reach their audience on their own then they don't need ms or sony and thus ms and sony lack the content to put on a big show.

not that sony and ms don't make a lot of good content but how many games do they actually ship in a year?  3? 5? 7?    are they going to blow every announcement they have in 1 show?   I just don't think so.

same.   my kid only wanted to play lego games for the longest time and any other game i tried with him was a dud.   ...but i recently got him into castle crashers and he now loves the brawler genre.  he's really excited for ninja turtles and so am i.
