Should still be playable for a long time, just no new content.

Still crazy though. Wtf are they doing with odyssey. You have to drop support for older hardware eventually but this includes ps5 and series x. I think they'll just release a new elite game in 5 years instead.

Yeah dropping series X and PS5 doesn't make sense. Unless series S is holding them back too much, but I dont think that's the case

I really don't understand the development of this game. Sometimes there are reports that they have a pretty large amount of developers working on it, like hundreds, yet the speed of development slowed to a crawl.

Base game released in Dec 2014.
Horizons DLC released in Dec 2015, adding the ability to land on planets.
Small free updates here and there.
Odyssey DLC released in May 2021, adding the ability to walk around planets plus stations.

Odyssey released in such a poor bare bones state that it might have killed the game, even though it took over 5 years. Maybe it was held back by their custom engine, since Elite is so unique compared to their other games.
