If it can pass FE3, that will be the accomplishment.

Quote from: AbdielSo I know you all have been curious, figured I'd give some impressions of stuff over the month.

Arkham did very well. In line with that, the ps4 bundles have done very well also. Not as amazing as Destiny, but I don't think anyone was expecting that anyway. Surprising number of people talking about the final fantasy vii remake too.

Saw a few people coming in to ask about the backwards compatibility for the xb1, but it was kind of a split for who bought one when it was determined it wouldn't be officially out til later this year, and it's not universal. We also had a dad return an mcc bundle because he found out halo 5 wouldn't support split screen at all, and he had only intended to do so with his son. His disappointment was really distinct.

Splatoon has been hit or miss, some of our stores sold out entirely, others haven't moved much over the month. Probably did well though.

Obviously this is all best buy impressions, so I have no idea how the larger trends in gamestop or Wal-Mart will be. I'm really interested though. If arkham did asas well there as with us, this will be a big month for the ps4.

Quote from: AbdielAs to the free game promo, eh. People took advantage of it, but it didn't have the star power awareness of even just the standard ps4 bundle, which I saw advertised a lot. It felt like no contest this month for us.

For e3, it's not usually a big thing, because many games are awhile out. We'll see more of a rush of preorders for games, instead of a big push of new hardware. But there was a bunch of people talking about ffvii, which I'll admit, made me smile.

All nice things to hear for us.

Super nice Splatoon is doing good. We need a new big ip franchise.

Really glad to hear about Halo 5. The bigger the impact, the more likely it'll be patched in.

Speaking of h5, what are we predicting sales wise?

Xbo is deep down that list. Did a sale just end?

Yeah, going off of what Abdiel observed and the straw poll you showed to us, the absence of splitscreen isn't likely going to blow over. As for Halo 5's sales, I think I predicted it to be between 8-9 million lifetime.

Plus just wait till the casual gamer finds out come launch. Split screen is even bigger among that crowd.

Halo 5 just has so many things going against it.

  • No offline multiplayer of any sort/no splitscreen
  • No LAN
  • No Martin O'Donnell
  • Poor Xbox One sales
  • Poor Xbox One reception
  • Horrible MCC reception
  • No Bungie
  • Poor Halo 4 reception
  • No campaign theater
  • Microtransactions

All of those things are 100% negative, no ifs ands or buts about it. Then we have all the controversial things that some like and others dislike
  • Average graphics and not 1080p
  • Locke is forced for probably half the game, yet is just a cheap MC alternative. Less important character with zero unique gameplay elements to separate him from John.
  • Squad commands could be good or bad. Big change to Halo.
  • Reviving teammates
  • Aim down sights
  • Faster
  • More twitch gameplay like COD
  • People like Masterchief, yet the story wants him to look like a bad guy. No one is falling for this.
  • Weird/ugly redesigns of characters

And finally all the definitely good changes for Halo 5
  • 60fps(maybe screwed other things up, but in isolation it's a great change)
  • Free DLC maps
  • New gametype: warzone
  • Dedicated servers(assuming they work and offer even the smallest advantage over pvp in previous games)

Let me know if I missed anything.

All things considered, feature wise it looks really really bad for Halo 5. It needs an awesome story and amazing combat to counteract all the negatives. If Halo 5 manages that, ie meta at 90+, then I think it could do 8 million or so. Great considering the Xbox One install base.

However the #hater in me just doesn't see that happening, based off everything 343s shown. I think it'll end up at around 5 million sales. Worst selling halo of all time. The E3 showing was poor and didn't capture mainstream attention, significant features have been removed, the game is making drastic changes to the formula, and PS4 is forcing Xbox One into being people's second console. The game will probably be good and loved by its players, but it won't be the sales juggernaut it once was.

Yeah, I think Halo 5 may pull a "Gran Turismo 6" (though GT6 sold less for different reasons). As an individual game, it's still going to sell well, but compared to its predecessors, it'll be the worst.

I think it also shows how extremely competitive the FPS market is. We're also getting Blacks Ops III, Battlefront, Destiny: The Taken King, and Fallout 4 (I know, this one is more RPGish). The Halo 5 footage Microsoft showed in their E3 conference didn't help break the game away from the pack.

Competition this holiday is hard i think, specifically with battlefront. Both sci fi shooters going head to head. Halo at least has sp as a nig wild card. Most people infact play sp over mp in Halo, and this holiday is lacking story driven campaigns. H5's strongest competition on that will be TR haha.

How did gt6 do btw? I knew it had a poor start but did things improve?

Honestly, I have no idea how well GT6 sold after launch and I'm not willing to use Chertz's numbers.

GT6 flopped massively in the USA.  i think it did 80k in december.

It has shown legs in Europe, as expected. We don't know how much it has sold overall though because PD never gave shipment numbers for it. Probably because it underperformed. I still bet that it sold more than VGC shows, given its history with the horrible GT5 undertracking in RotW
