Sony's Jim Ryan comments on backwards compatibility: "why would anybody play this?" - NeoGAF

Quote
QuoteAnother concern occasionally raised by PlayStation devotees involves the company's once-ubiquitous PlayStation 2. While Sony has in recent years devoted resources to bringing a handful of popular older titles to the PlayStation 4, the better part of that library is lost to time. For now, it seems that's where it'll remain. "When we've dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much," says Ryan. "That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?"

I have a plethora of PSX and PS2 Fighting games that I still play.  Not to mention I just started Persona 3...

They want to push ps now and putting classics up for people to repurchase so why would they have it.  I'd never use any of their options, tbh.

He is wrong.

I play a large amount of old games across all platforms, b/c is a big selling point for me.

Two days ago I literally had to bring my PS2 out of storage just because there are some old games I wanted to return to.

Majority of people who are interested in B/C wont even bother with PSNow because its a streaming service.

Its not used much because of what little b/c they had to begin with  was shaming.

Buying games again at price tags of $10 and $20 wont make people use them obviously either

Cough at the $20 PS2 "classics".

I'm pretty sure b/c was something that was obviously used a lot during the PS2 era because thats true b/c.

They pretty much released it so they can keep people quiet but it was DOA because of how it was implemented.

I think what he means is that it's not as popular in the real world as it is among hardcore forum-browsing gamers ;)

I'm not saying I wouldn't like it

Only 2% of Xbox players use B/C. Say he's wrong all you like but the reality is you're part of a small niche. His statement regarding much requested and not used much is bang on the money.

His other statement regarding gran turismo 1&2 is also absolutely right. "Why would anybody play this".  I can understand an argument for gt3 or gt4. But who thwfuck would regularly play GT 1 or 2. I'll tell you who.  A tiny niche.  less then would even use the 4k player if it had one.

Well GT is a bad example, in my opinion.
Why would anyone play an older GT game?
In my opinion, they don't have the same value as say Ratchet and Clank, Dark Cloud.
Those games would be worth playing and I'm glad Dark Cloud is on PSN, but if it wasn't.  That would be a better example.  It is a much more unique game, and actually has a story.  I personally wouldn't see a reason to play Mario Kart Wii over Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.  But Pokemon Colosseum?  Heck yes.

Also feels a tad silly to say a feature isn't worth it, because only 2% use it.  For the PS4, that's over 1 million people who would use it on a regular basis.  Even for a lot of people who wouldn't use it even close to regularly, it would still be exciting and an awesome bonus feature.

Of course its not popular in the real world when you can simply put in the disc on a PC and play the game in a higher def over paying $20 for a HD uplift that doesnt even compare to emulation on PC with "Trophy" support lol.

Like I said, this half assed b/c  right now is nothing compared to true b/c during the PS2 era.
