I watched that episode with the commentary.  They were contrasting this fight with Ang's vs the Fire Lord.  They were like, Ang's fight needed to be loud then they'd cut to this fight.  With this fight, they lowered the fx sounds because they needed the music to take emphasis since this was supposed to be sad.  Some of the best character development I've seen, ever, is in this show.
