HUDs at least personally feel odd just being glued to your head in VR. Normal people never experience anything like that in real life.Crystal Rift has a stability mode that has translucent cubes placed across the field of view. Only game I've seen with it.
Also that doesn't really mimic the TV experience. With a HUD displayed on a TV you see all of it and can twist your head when looking at parts of it. In VR it feels closer to your face and you can't twist your head to see it.
Not sure how common this is, but when prototyping Cube Royale VR I really liked displaying the HUD within the 3D space as if there was a magic floating TV screen in front of you. Felt more like a traditional game HUD than an Iron Man suit.
