Sony's PS3 gets new system software update, 19 years after release

QuoteSony has just released a new update for its PS3 console, which turns 19 this year.

The system software update 4.92 improves system performance, according to the patch notes, and also renews the Blu-ray player encryption key to allow for disc playback.

Updates of this sort are an annual occurrence, as the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) encryption key regularly expires - it's a copyright-protection technology that requires a key to be set on both the disc and the console in order to play new films.

The key also exists on PS4 and PS5, but according to the console manuals, the encryption key is automatically renewed, but on PS3 it must be done in a system update.

I wonder how long they will continue updating it. And why can't they just update the software to have it update without a software update.

that was my question too.   I didn't know about this so my immediate thought was how long until my console bricks. :(

um.. how is that going to work in practise.  will turning on my controller turn on both of my ps5s?   they are close enough in the house that it could likely be a problem for me.

Yeah - need more information to know if this is a good thing.

Maybe it adds different buttons to turn on the controller.
PS + Up = Device 1
PS + Down = Device 2

PS button = Device 1
Share Button = Device 2

I could see it working okay, like that. But still kind of messy.

i at one point had that ps4 setting turned on where when you turn on the ps4 the ps4 turns on the tv.   it was fine when ps4 was my only device but once i put my switch under it i got stuck in a loop.

1. turn on switch
2. turn on tv
3. ps4 get's turned on
4. tv changes source to ps4
5. turn off ps4
6. ps4 turns the tv off
7. turn on the tv
8. the tv turns on the ps4....

details matter.
