After googling, nobody knows.

Lots of evidence of it being 4 joycons max.

Well 4 joy cons would support 4 players but not well.

The Mario Kart Deluxe page on  Nintendo.com says it supports 4 players on TV mode.

Yeah that's one joycon per person. Most games need two joycons, like ARMS.

4 joycons max isn't too surprising.  that's pretty common on any wireless devices.  there are only so many available frequencies on which to communicate data.

4 joycons would be fine.  Unless you play those dual wielding games.  Does Breath of the Wild support dual wielding?  One for waggle to use the sword and one for the analogue stick.  Though, I'm probably the only person who actually liked motion controls :/

You're thinking of it a different way than I am.

IMO this counts as two joycons:

Almost all games require two Joycons or a pro controller. Mario Kart is the only non minigame game I know of that can be played with a single Joycon and thus 4 players local.

Are you sure I can't rip the joycons apart and use one for just Breath of the Wild?  Plus I'm thinking they need more games that use 4 like Mario Kart.

You can rip them apart and use one in each hand, but it can't be played with a single Joycon.

And I guess the sports games can also be played with a single Joycon.

I guess you need both analogue sticks.
