I can't find any indication of this beta coming to any other platform. I will update if I do:

What exactly is this? Some kind of MMO?

I don't know. It seems to be open world along the lines of Steep.

It must have some sort of integral multiplayer element to it to release in Beta form and still be able to charge for it.

I think we can blame that survival open world game with dinosaurs (sorry can't remember the name) for this. They added paid DLC to a game that wasn't even finished. That opened up a problematic door as the whole DLC did way back when people were saying 'there's no way I'd pay for that!'

Is this the first PS4 game to have a paid beta?

From what I remember, yes. I just hope it doesn't catch on. It's bad enough that some devs are actively cutting content in order to sell DLC in the future but to now allow 'unfinished' games to be sold ...

It may be good for business up front but it's not going to help the industry in the long run.

Yeah early access like this is such a risky concept.

It's a slippery slope and those who drive this business know if they push it hard enough the resistance will dwindle and eventually you'll start getting people defending it in order to feel good about gaming again. It's basic psychology. When a person has no way of changing what they know to be wrong, they adapt to accept it. Remember what 'horse armour' caused a HUGE controversy? Just pushing is all they needed.

It's crazy how more more we become ok with these things. Can you imagine 5 years from now thinking what crazy monetization things will exist and be accepted?

People need to push back by not buying the products that promote these practices. The problem is when these practices are attached to mainstream products and are sold to people who haven't got a clue what's going on. Once we see COD, FIFA, Madden etc with a pay to play model (which will turn into a pay to win model), then it's done. If we have to pinpoint where the problem lies, I don't think we need to look no further than the phone business. The model was really born there and is slowly finding its way into 'true' gaming (sorry to any phone enthusiasts on this site).

Let's face it, Unfinished games, funded by gamers, with DLC and the pay to win model is the ultimate goal for big businesses. And then of course getting us used to not actually 'owning' the product. Digital began that but there are still people who want bigger HDDs because the idea of 'ownership' is so instilled in us we can't bring ourselves to press 'delete', even though we can easily download it again at some point in the future if we so wish. Once that idea of 'ownership' is broken then streaming will be accepted more. This is why Sony bought Gaikai and why they didn't include a 4K Blu-ray drive on the PS4pro (IMO).

I understand both your points but still  being in beta doesn't necessarily mean unfinished in the way you're implying. Think PS Home, that was in beta state until it was closed down but it was in beta state only because they constantly added stuff, changed and molded it with feedback. I don't have a problem if the game is there and they will attempt to add and mold it over time. If it's unfinished in the sense of lack of content and/or broken buggy gameplay then no it shouldn't be supported.

Yes, I get what you're saying but once you accept the concept there's no going back. We must draw a line before the line seems necessary.

If sony allow it then there's not much we can do. Much more shady shame is accepted and is now standard.

Oh, it's going to happen without a doubt. It's just a matter slowing it down so I'm too old to care
