Sony likely saved about $15 by not including a UHD drive in PS4 Pro. - NeoGAF

QuotePosted in another topic but figured it was thread worthy.According to IHS when comparing the price of the regular BR drive to the UHD the difference is only$15.50 more comparing the XB1 and the slim. Assuming Sony's price is the same (would likey be lower) they decided it wasn't worth dropping $15 to give you a 4K device that offers non-suboptimal image quality.

The new console also includes a UHD BD-ROM player, with a bill of materials (BOM) cost of $33.50, versus the previous $18 conventional Blu-Ray drive.

#4theshareholders indeed.

Quote from: Lordfancypants on Sep 07, 2016, 11:16 PMSeems odd not to support it.  I expect MS will hammer this point during the holidays
ms would be fools to do that.

blu ray sales dropped 12% last year while streaming grew 18%.   blu ray still hasn't distanced itself from dvd. people just don't car about blu ray and UHD is massively less important.  UHD is going to be as relavant as those HD audio dics.

every dollar ms puts into UHD players is a waste.  every dollar ms puts into advertising xbox has a UHD player is a 100 fold waste because it actively brands the device as an unwanted technology.  it is really the same as when ms put all that marketing behind the HDMI in port,..  unwanted tech that distracts form the core product feature and contibuted to xbox being tens of millions of units behind playstation.

Yeah, I posted again after thinking about the fact that I don't even buy disc movies anymore.  I'm actually a prime example of it being a waste.
I still think they'll hammer it with advertising that could be interpreted that its 4k through and through even for games without actually saying the games will do 4k.
I know people who thought they bought the scorpio.
Is this where I talk favorably about myself?

Oh gaf and the hyperbole posts!  Honestly people get way too upset about things.  Sure it's disappointing, but I seriously don't care that much.  A month down the line and no one will give a shame, except fanboy console warriors and MS who will hammer that point for as long as they can.

Q: Will there be any 4K PlayStation Store movies or TV shows?
There are no plans for this at PS4 Pro's launch, but the PlayStation Network team is looking into it.

Could this at least become a semi solution for the 4K bluray problem? Letting people actually download 4K movies?

That would take a lot of hard drive space. I guess it wouldn't be too much worse than downloading games though.

Yeah that's what I've been wondering, how big are real 4K movies?

It can vary a lot, but this one is massive.
160 GB
According to Netflix though, we could likely do 14 GB for a 2 hour movie.  (Given enough compression.)

Sony 4K movie service will work with PS4, require 100GB-plus downloads | The Verge

I have friends texting me about this. Seems it might be a big deal.

About the missing 4K bluray player?

It's the flavour of the week thing to be mad about, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I really don't think the missing 4K bluray player will be a huge problem in the long run

So I just realize that Sony hasn't even released a real 4K bluray player as of this point. I guess they really just don't think the format will take off, I'm inclined to agree.

Sure enough. They only have 4k upscale players
