You've probably heard it by now. Are you surprised? Is it a mistake by Sony to not support it? Would it effect your decision to buy one?

DerNebel

Wouldn't affect my buying decision, no. It's a weird decision that I don't think will matter in the long run.

Also I'm still not 100% convinced that they can't remedy that situation via a firmware update eventually. Then again, I have no clue about bluray technology.

It's pretty odd, but I don't really care. Pretty much switch to all streaming media.

I mean, what's really keeping it from playing 4k blu rays anyway. It should have everything it needs.

I was shocked but I don't even watch Blu-Rays on my PS3 so it doesn't bother me. It's still a strange choice, how much will they save in production per console by not adding it?

I dunno, I'm trying to figure out why it can't play it. It has everything it needs.  Unless theres something about the drive that wont allow it to read the disk.

They save a whopping
Spoiler for Hidden:
$0

Or close to that at least. I think the problem is who would buy a Sony 4K player when they could just buy the PS4 Pro for cheaper?

Ok, did they sell their stake in Blu-Ray? That would make more sense!

Wasn't that the PS2 and PS3's selling point?

Well let's just say they had to add a new drive. It cost them 2 dollars extra for this new drive. It could save the company 80 to 120 million dollars. That's why they do stupid shame like pull the audio and the light from the slim. It's all about cost reductions, even leaving out a few screws that might not be needed could save the company millions.

I'm assuming @Legend was refering to the drive currently being capable.

No they still own part of bluray, but think of it like this.

PS4 Pro makes money from games so Sony doesn't worry about making money off the machine. Let's imagine they make $10 off every PS4 Pro sold.

Meanwhile 4K bluray players have much larger profit margins and makes $100 for Sony from every unit sold.

If a potential 4K bluray player buyer decides to buy a PS4 pro instead, Sony effectively loses $90. They don't want the PS4 Pro to hurt their standalone bluray player sales.

PS1 too.

That was back when they did red ocean though.

Yup I agree with that too, but I don't think it was the cause in this case.

PS3s were actually way cheaper than Sony Blu-ray players when the PS3 launched.

Blu-ray players were around 1000$, PS3 was 600$ and actually had better features like being Blu-ray 2.0 compatible, while those 1000$ ones weren't.

Lordfancypants

Seems odd not to support it.  I expect MS will hammer this point during the holidays
Is this where I talk favorably about myself?

Lordfancypants

The more I think about it Sony must have some data that shows streaming is more important than physical 4k.  It makes sense in a way.  I had at one time around 500 dvd's.  I have like 5 blu rays by comparison that I've received as gifts.  I just stream now for convenience and I'm probably not alone in this.

Good decision and I'm glad they did.  I'll never buy a single 4k blu ray movie on disc and I doubt most consumers are the same.  If it means a $399 price then super choice.  I'm happy.
