QuoteWith the Xbox Play Anywhere program, you can buy a game once and play on your Windows 10 PC and Xbox One with shared progress, shared game saves and shared achievements. Every new title published from Microsoft Studios will support Xbox Play Anywhere and will be easily accessible in the Windows Store.

What does this mean for the future?

If W10 apps fail (probable), will MS just transition into a 3rd party publisher? Or if W10 does well, will they end XBOX hardware?

I think they'll just release more games on steam in the future

I can see MS releasing their games on both W10 and Steam, but charge a bit more for the Steam version.

Then they buy an Xbox.

Problem is that Xbox can't survive off just a couple million sales. If less people buy the system, less games are ported. Thus less people buy, and less games are ported. Etc. Only hardcore xbox console fans will remain, and at that point MS might not wish to continue supporting the hardware.

actually only hardcore gamers with xbox as a secondary console will go. and they will go to PC where they would buy their software. casuals dont care for gaming PC's as much as they do for consoles and affordability. no gaming PC is gonna compete with the value of a 250$ xbox. casuals will stay, hardcore xbox fans will stay and the hardcore gamers with xbox as a secondary would leave.

Well it was hinted at MS this was the last gen they will do console business.

If they can converts most Xbox One users to Win 10 service then it will be good for them.

It's not about gaming PCs, just standard household computers and laptops.

Why spend money when you have a system that can already play all the games? Casuals don't care about graphics; they just need pc gaming to be socially acceptable. With Surface books, it is. College use of xbox will drop a lot imo.
