NeoGAF - View Single Post -  Days Gone (Sony Bend, UE4) - E3 2016 Gameplay Walkthrough

QuoteI assume this has been posted, but the Devs of Days Gone just sat down with RoosterTeeth and they are talking all about the game.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbyCHplt0no Since Rooster Teeth is broadcasting live, just click the link, rewind the video about 30-45 minutes, they are really breaking it down.

* Studio is about 100 people, was around 40 - 50 for Uncharted Vita.

* Game is PS4 Exclusive, no PC mode "We are Sony Bend, we are PS4 Exclusive" lol. At Sony Bend, they make it very clear during interview, everyone wears a lot of hats. Many people are involved in different aspects.

* One thing I picked up is you ride a special bike, called a Drifter, that can drive off road, they said lots of off roading since the roads are all broken up, "Broken Roads." The bike is needed to survive, it is like its own character. It has saddle bags that holds your inventory. The bike is grounded, you will need to "know where it is and manage it" Several devs are bikers, lots of research into the bike. Actually got it up on rollers to make sure they got the sound of the bike right.

* Also, weather has a big effect on traveling and how the bike handles.

* No Multiplayer at all, focusing on their strengths, single player story.

* Demo was a bounty hunting mission, hunting down a biker "2 Dog" and tried to show the danger of leaving the safety of encampments.

* Wanted the game to be a big sandbox of what you would do when "shame goes down."

* Weapons crafting system, they call a "MacGuyver Mentality" where the you figure out clever ways to build tools to get out of situations.

* Their demo they are showing off on show floor has "millions" of ways to play that demo, depending on what tools you bring with you. The environment also plays a huge role in how you deal with certain situations.

* Takes place just a few years after the "apocolypse" event. Society is starting to try to rebuild, as supplies are starting to run out. Made it sound like part of the game is figuring out what to do with the resources you find.

* Wildlife is in the game, they have a "huge" wildlife system they aren't going to talk much about right now. But the event didn't wipe out all wildlife.

* Not willing to talk yet about different story paths, different endings, etc. They chuckled but they dont want to talk about it yet.

* Zombie hoard was all real, no LOD tricks, there are that many people on the screen.

* No release date or time window. They aren't wanting to do that right now.

* It was huge for their studio to be right up there on stage, getting prime focus, along with all of Sony's other big studios. It showed them how much Sony believes in their product. It meant a lot to them.
And thats it!  Loved listening to that.

Ouch @14:15...
Days Gone will need to really bring it hard to Gamescom.

Not really surprised. It's a new zombie IP at a conference where two other established zombie franchises got sequels announced. There were a lot of other games there that have a lot more going for them in the minds of gamers. Zombie apocalypse is overplayed. Bend Studio really needs to get the word out about Days Gone's RPG elements, world systems, and storyline. Because right now the impression is that it's "just another game where you shoot mass zombies". Of course, it doesn't help that the conference demo everyone saw was only half as interesting as the extended video that came out later.

Was the Days Gone just a video?

It's a presentation. You have the game devs stand up and talk to press about the game. They might be playing the demo to show things, but journalists can only ask questions.

They're the main E3 thing.

I heard it was invite-only. I could be wrong.

Oh those thingies.  :P

I guess my friend is excited about this game, I'm not really interested (yet).

fully agree.

the more i know about the game, the more i am interested, but they did a bad job with the reveal in my opinion. as it stands now, the game isnt really generating any hype, and they have to show more about what makes it different. the ecosystem of the "freakers" for example, and if it has multiple paths for the story they should announce and show that too.

Around 2:30. Not save to assume that this will come out 2017. Either they are sure they won't make it or Sony has given out clear directions to their devs to not give out any indications of release windows until something official is announced.

Rorono

I think it's the latter, there was also an interview with someone else (i don't remember which game and dev anymore) where they clearly wanted to avoid saying anything about a date

Last year Horizon trailer did not have a date. It was Herman who in post interviews said they were "targeting 2016".
Seems there is a mandate to no longer say things like that for obvious reasons

yeah that sucks, it seems they arent sure its going to be released next year. or Sony are just not going to comment on release dates until they have a firm one ready.

personally i am expecting a Q1 2018 release.

Some tidbits in there. Freakers aren't actually zombies. They're alive and require the same things we do. They do not come out during the day which gives you the opportunity to set up traps to deal with them later. The fact that they're alive is why they were so much easier to gun down, unlike how we normally think of zombies. No big urban areas in the game. This is about surviving in the wilds of Northwest US. There is a skill tree type system in the game. The play space was made large enough that riding around on a motorcycle makes sense.

But the demo was during the day.
