I love stuff like this.

BananaKing

it was 3d, its rendering technique might have not been "3d", but it played 3d and was fudgy 3d.

Did you watch the video? Gameplay was 100% 2D. The Z axis only existed for graphics.

it played in 3d, that means its 3d. i dont care about the technicial limitations or the frankly genius method they managed to make a 3D game on hardware that didnt support 3d. just because it had technical limitations doesnt undo that it plays in 3d.

It played in 2d. The graphics are fake 3d, but the gameplay is fully 2D. There is zero vertical gameplay.

Quake didnt have verticality to it, Doom did, you just couldnt aim up and down, but you could go up steps and stairs and such. both doom and quake, while "fake 3d" are still 3D. they play as a 3D game, yes they have limits, but still are 3D.

But the steps and stairs only existed as graphics.

They couldn't overlap other areas or affect gameplay. Enemies high above or far below you are still shot regardless. The game physics/engine are 2D while the render system stretches it to look 3D.

Not being able to look up or down was a hard limit of the engine, not a design choice.

I didn't know any of this stuff till I watched the video and a few related videos.

So you agree it is 3d. Processing trickery is irrelevant. Width (left to right) depth (front to back) and height (top to bottom) can all be observed in game. It's 3d. If you say no because of those reasons then no game is 3d

The graphics were 3D, but the gameplay wasn't.

Am I the only one that watched the full video? This didn't seem like a controversial explanation!

Gameplay is irrelevant when saying Doom's gameplay was 2D?

I think you might be arguing against something I never said.

I watched the video.
But really games are like 1D, 1's and 0's are just not very graphic intensive.
