Because originally the game had reached all of its funding goals at $65 million, at that point they should have closed the public funding campaign and get to work on delivering what they had promised, instead they've kept it open, periodically added more ships and other shame (like stupid merchanidse for a non-existing game) to sell and thus at this point are over 50% over budget, constantly expanding the game and falling further and further behind schedule. The game started crowdfunding over 3 years ago (and apparently started development in 2011) and has recently started "Alpha 2.0", I mean are you fudgy kidding me? And how is a game that is so much over its initially asked budget still selling virtual ships to people that at times go for over $300? Does that not seem dirty to anybody else?

There is a point to something like budgeting, to working within time and monetary limits, it serves to keep development focused and on track. This game is entirely ignoring all of that, simply putting a team in a situation where they can literally do whatever the heck they want with it, I mean they aren't even legally obligated to issue refunds if they don't want to.

I mean just imagine you're one of those early backers that funded the project back in 2012 and you're still nowhere near getting the game you funded 3 years ago because the devs keep raking in cash and using it to add things into the game that weren't part of the original package and that you never asked for.

It really depends on how honest/legit Robert is. If things are falling apart behind the scenes or content is being delayed just so they can keep the fundraising going, then that's absolutely horrible.

However if he's been honest and things are going like they're acting, which seems pretty likely, then I don't see anything wrong with it. The game had feature creep with all the stretch goals but past $65 million new content isn't being funded. It's just pure donations/pre-orders/ship buying with no direct effect to the game's development. It's not causing the game to go over budget or fall behind schedule.

Speaking of schedule, it's not sketchy in the slightest. The original game vision was planned for release in 2015, and the extremely expanded vision is releasing 2016/2017. 5-6 years of development for a huge game with studios built from the ground up is pretty impressive actually.

It's crazy how much people are willing to spend on ships, but what company would ever shut down an income source? Most kickstarter games keep additional funding open throughout development. If Chris Roberts is doing a scam then yes this is horrible, but if he's focused on releasing the game then I don't see a problem with this.

Sure it's disappointing for donors like you mention, but it's such a minor problem. Most early backers are excited that the game is fully featured. If they aren't, they can just get a refund. RSI seems pretty good at giving them out.

I was like "wait what, that's star citizen!?!?! That's sweet!" Caused me to not care about the business but just judge it as a game. Then a few days ago I got to play a few parts of the game for free. Walking around the planet made me feel so giddy, like the space game I always dreamed of. The results speak for themselves in a sense. Game is real, game is fun, and game is shaping up nicely.
